← Day 20

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

The Storm Breaches

Kevin is at the dock securing the generator, while Jenny is at the garden checking the tarp tensionings.

Kevin successfully dragged the waterlogged crate further up the dock before the rising tide could reach the planks. Jenny attempted to plant the heirloom tomato and pepper seeds, but the high humidity and damp soil made the process difficult and prone to failure.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You tie down the extra lines just as the rain begins to lash.

🔧 Kevin14:40

Kevin — double the bow and stern lines on the dinghy, check the chafe gear on the ring bolts, then secure the tarp over the cockpit with the bungee cords.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here early. Barometer dropping faster than forecast. Need to get the dinghy lines doubled before the wind picks up proper.

🔧 Kevin14:44

Kevin — drag the waterlogged crate further up the dock, clear of the tide line, and chock it against the shed wall with spare timber.

💭 peek at the thought
Dinghy's lashed down tight. Tarp's holding. Wind's clocking southwest — good, keeps the fetch off the dock. Now the crate. If the tide comes up under it with this blow, it'll smash the jetty planking or take the ring bolts with it.

🔧 Kevin14:48

Kevin — walk back to the cottage, wipe hands on thighs, pick up the shortwave handset and key 2182.

💭 peek at the thought
Crate's chocked. Shed wall'll take the weight if the surge comes over the planking. Back's complaining from the drag — wet timber's heavy. Rain's proper now, horizontal. Can't see the boat approach from here if she comes. Radio's in the cottage. Should be listening.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You pile heavy stones on the corners to prevent the wind from ripping them.

🌿 Jenny14:38

Jenny — bend down slowly to heave the heavy stones onto the corners of the plastic tarp, bracing a hand against the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
My back is killing me. If this storm hits hard, the stones might not be enough, but it's better than nothing.

🌿 Jenny14:42

Jenny — gather the boiled limpets and chopped sea beet, carrying them carefully back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The air feels wrong. Too heavy. I need to get the food inside before the rain turns the path into a creek.

🌿 Jenny14:46

Jenny — walk over to the garden wall and run a finger along the new mortar to check if it's set.

💭 peek at the thought
Still no sign of the rain, but the light is turning that bruised purple color. I can't leave the wall like this; if the mortar is still wet, the wind will just scour it right out.
