The Low Tide Window

The tide is at its lowest point, revealing the rocks where the seabird chick lies wedged. The wind has picked up, carrying the scent of the open sea.

The tide has retreated, leaving the northern shelf slick with kelp and teeming with life. Kevin returned with the stranded chick tucked safely against his chest just as the barometer began its sharp drop. Inside the cottage, the air is warm and smelling of drying mint and sea beet, as they focus on the bird's fragile state.

🔧 Kevin07:40

Jenny — got a chick stranded on the tide line. Going to get it before the water comes back.

Walk down the jetty and across the exposed rocks to where the chick is wedged, moving carefully on the wet stone.

💭 peek at the thought
The chick won't survive the next tide if it stays there. Wind's cold and the parents won't come down to the rocks with me this close. Need to move fast before the water turns.

🌿 Jenny07:40

Watch the step, the rocks are slick with kelp.

way stands at the edge of the dock, gripping the railing as she watches him move across the water.

💭 peek at the thought
If he slips and breaks that ankle again, I'm not carrying him back to the cottage.

🔧 Kevin07:42

Aye. Got it.

Pick my way across the slick rocks, testing each footfall before committing weight. Stop beside the chick, crouch low, and gently scoop it up into my hands, shielding it from the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the kelp's thick on the lower ledges. One wrong step and I'm in the water with a busted ankle and a chick in my jacket. Slow and deliberate.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:42

Get back here fast. The barometer is dropping faster than I thought.

way watches him climb back up the jetty, eyes fixed on the grey horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
It's shivering. way like the rest of this miserable place.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:44

Coming.

Turn and move back across the rocks at a quicker pace, boots finding the holds I tested on the way out. Step up onto the jetty planks and head straight for the cottage door, cupping the chick against my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's falling harder now. She sees it too. Chick's cold against my palms — barely any weight to it. Need to get it warm and dry before the front hits proper.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:44

Get it inside. We need to check the trays again.

way holds the door open and moves toward the kitchen to clear a space.

💭 peek at the thought
It's so small. Its heart is racing against my palm.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:46

Trays'll keep. Get a towel and the hot water bottle from the bed.

Step through the door into the cottage warmth, moving straight to the kitchen table. Set the chick down gently on a dry cloth, cupping my hands around it to start warming it with body heat.

💭 peek at the thought
Trays can wait five minutes. This thing's core temp is crashing. She's practical — always practical — but she's not looking at the chick.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:46

Don't move it too much. It's in shock.

way walks to the bedroom, grabbing the towel and the water bottle.

💭 peek at the thought
If it dies, it's just another thing this island can't keep.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:48

Right. I'll get the box ready.

Pull the cardboard box from under the table, line it with the towel she left on the chair yesterday, and set the hot water bottle in the corner wrapped in a second cloth. Test the temperature with the back of my wrist.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows. Seen her do this before with storm-blown petrels. My hands are too rough anyway — engine grease and salt ground into the knuckles. Better she handles it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:48

Is the bottle warm enough? Not scalding hot.

way comes back to the kitchen with the bottle and towel, watching the chick on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast. I feel it in my joints.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:50

It's good. Not too hot.

Step back and let her work, leaning against the counter with arms folded. Watch her hands — careful, precise — as she settles the chick into the box.

💭 peek at the thought
Back of my wrist says it's right — warm as bath water, not burning. She's asking because she's checking me, not the bottle. The chick's eyes are open now, dark and bright, head lifting a fraction.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:50

Put the bottle in there, but not touching the bird.

way places the wrapped bottle in the box and reaches out to check the chick's wings.

💭 peek at the thought
It's so fragile. One wrong move and it snaps.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:52

Kevin — pick up the hot water bottle and set it against the side wall of the box, leaving a hand's width of towel between it and where the chick sits. Then step back again, giving her room.

💭 peek at the thought
She's checking for fractures — the wings, the legs, the keel. Standard. If the keel's sharp, it's been starving a while. If the wings fold clean, no breaks from the fall. I've seen her do this half a dozen times now. She doesn't talk while she works.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:52

It's warming up. We need to stay dry.

way crouches by the table, watching the chick's chest rise.

💭 peek at the thought
Its heart is beating so fast, like a trapped moth.
