Shared meal and storm watch

Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table eating boiled limpets with corned beef fat. The shortwave radio sits wrapped in cloth beside Jenny's notebook. Through the window, the trade wind pushes cloud shadow across the garden. The barometer on the porch reads 1026 hPa. They talk in low voices about what the sky means and what needs doing before dark.

The steady rain continues to drum against the roof of the cottage, keeping the air humid and stifling. Inside, the water tank has reached its 400-litre capacity, while the tide pulls further out, exposing more of the rocky shelf.

The air is changing. We need to check the tension on the radio mast before the rain really comes down.

wipe grease from my mouth with the back of my hand and stand up to walk to the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is holding for now, but those clouds are too heavy. If I don't tighten the mast wires, the wind will take the whole thing down tomorrow.

Mast first. Then the garden corner. Coffee after.

push back from the table and pull on my boots

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the air. The barometer says steady but the sky's telling different — those mares' tails she sketched mean upper-level moisture, and the grey behind the ridge is lowering. Radio mast first, then the garden tarp corner that's been flapping. My ankle's stiff from the brace but the mast won't wait.

I'll grab the way. The wind is already picking up.

grab the heavy wrench from the kitchen and step out into the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always making a list, but the garden is what's actually dying if I don't move now.

Watch the footing. Rocks are slick.

follow her out onto the porch, scanning the mast and guy wires against the darkening sky

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving faster than I am. Good. The wrench is heavy for her but she knows the mast bolts better than she lets on — helped me re-bed the insulator last month. Rain's cold on the porch boards. Need to check the guy wires while she's at the base.

🌿 Jenny08:28

I know. Just watch the light.

step off the porch and head toward the base of the mast.

💭 peek at the thought
He's worried about the rocks, but I'm worried about the tension. If that mast snaps, I'm cut off for good.

🔧 Kevin08:28

East guy's wearing. I'll take the bitter end.

climb the first two steps of the mast ladder, testing each rung for slip, and grab the frayed wire where it exits the thimble

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the light for me — knows my ankle won't take a twist on wet stone. The mast's leaning slightly east, guy wires singing in the wind. One strand's frayed where it passes through the thimble. Need to re-serve it before it parts.

🌿 Jenny08:30

Don't pull too hard yet. Let me check the turnbuckle first.

move to the base of the mast and fit the wrench to the bolt.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the east wire is fraying. If that goes, the whole array leans like a dead tree.

🔧 Kevin08:30

Take it easy. Quarter turns.

hold the frayed section steady with both hands, waiting for the tension to ease, watching the wire strands for any fresh breakage

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the turnbuckle. Good — if she backs the tension off slow, I can work the fray without the wire snapping under load. The ladder rung's cold and wet under my boots. Ankle's holding so far. Rain's coming down harder now, horizontal sheets.
