The gathering swells

The rain intensifies as the low tide reaches its lowest point, revealing hidden tide pools and the base of the northern shelf.

Kevin spent the afternoon at the tide pools gathering remaining limpets and checking the shoreline's state. Jenny focused on the garden, tending to the seedlings and organizing the seed trays as the air pressure dropped.

Going to the tide pools. Back before dark.

walk to the tide pools

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still falling and the tide's bottomed out. Good time to check the northern shelf sea beet stand while the water's low — might not get another window before the supply boat's due.

🌿 Jenny08:32

Take the lantern. The barometer isn't lying, Kevin.

Wipe the condensation off the notebook page and sketch the fuzz on a sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
Who's going out there with the pressure dropping that fast? The rocks will be slick as glass in twenty minutes.

🔧 Kevin08:34

Lantern's on the porch hook.

grab the lantern from the porch hook and head to the tide pools

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The pressure's dropping faster than I liked the look of at noon. Lantern's smart — if the squall hits while I'm out there, I'll need it to find the path back.

🌿 Jenny08:34

Watch your step on the shelf rocks.

Stand up and check the seal on the kitchen windows.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked and catch a chill. The wind is already picking up.

🔧 Kevin08:36

Aye.

walk down the path to the tide pools, lantern in hand

💭 peek at the thought
The shelf rocks go slick as grease when the rain hits them. She knows I know, but she says it anyway. That's how it works now.

🌿 Jenny08:36

Jenny — walk to the wood way and feed the fire.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is turning that ugly shade of green. If the storm hits now, the radio mast won't hold it.

🔧 Kevin08:38

Kevin — reach the tide pools and move out onto the northern shelf rocks, lantern light picking the way

💭 peek at the thought
The path's wet stone and tree roots. Lantern throws a small circle — enough. Tide's right out. Northern shelf should be exposed now, the sea beet stand with it. Need to check how the stand's holding after the rain, and if the crustacean clusters are still thick on the rocks.

🌿 Jenny08:38

Come back if the tide turns!

Go back to the kitchen and check the barometer again.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is howling through the eaves now. If he stays out there when the surge hits, he'll be trapped.

🔧 Kevin08:40

Kevin — kneel at the sea beet stand, shield the notebook with my body, and sketch the plant density and crustacean clusters by lantern light

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's slack low. Got maybe forty minutes before it starts pushing back in. The sea beet stand's right at the shelf edge — thick, dark leaves against the rock. Crustaceans clustered in the pools around them, same as last time. Rain's hammering the water surface now, hard to see through the lantern glare. Need to log the stand density and check if any plants are showing stress from the pressure drop.

🌿 Jenny08:41

You're going to get swept out there!

Pace the kitchen floor and watch the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is at 1023 hPa and still falling. He's out there sketching weeds while the whole island is screaming.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:42

Kevin — finish the elevation sketch, log the crustacean density, and start back up the path before the tide turns

💭 peek at the thought
She's at the window watching a lantern bob on black rocks in driving rain. Forty minutes in the Bay of Biscay taught me what water does when it decides to take you. But the tide's not turned yet, and the stand's holding — plants thick, crustaceans dense in every pool. This data matters for the trust report. One more sketch of the elevation gradient, then I'm gone.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:42

Get inside! The pressure is too low.

Walk to the stove and check the water.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up again. If he doesn't come back now, I'll be calling on the radio.
