Evening Preparation

The sun begins to dip, casting long shadows across the garden as you both gather to head toward the ridge to check the stone cairns.

Kevin and Jenny reached the north ridge cairns and examined the Carex seed heads in the fading light. Kevin's fingers were too clumsy to test the seeds cleanly, but Jenny confirmed the seed heads were viable with a metallic sheen from silica coats. They turned back toward the shrine as darkness fell.

🌿 Jenny09:22

The shadows are stretching. We should move if we want to see the cairns before it's pitch black.

Walk toward the ridge, stepping carefully over the uneven stones.

💭 peek at the thought
The light is turning a bruised purple. I can feel the hunger clawing at my stomach, but the air up here is cleaner.

🔧 Kevin09:24

Right behind you.

walk toward the ridge, watching footing on the uneven stones

💭 peek at the thought
The light's going fast. Good to check the cairns before dark — they're the only reliable way back through the gorse if the fog rolls in.

🌿 Jenny09:24

Jenny — stop for a moment to sketch a quick thumbnail of the ridge silhouette in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always just behind me. A constant, quiet presence that feels more like a shadow than a partner lately.

🔧 Kevin09:26

Kevin — pause beside her, scanning the ridge for the first cairn shape against the sky

💭 peek at the thought
She's marking the ridge line against the fading light. Smart — gives us a visual anchor if we're coming back in darkness.

🌿 Jenny09:26

There. Just past that outcrop. I can see the first one.

Point toward the first cairn and close the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking for the markers, but I'm looking at the way the light hits the scrub. There's something silver-green clinging to the lee side of that rock.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin09:28

See it.

start walking toward the outcrop and the first cairn

💭 peek at the thought
Good eye. The first cairn's visible — a darker lump against the sky. Three of them along the approach, spaced for the Carex transect line.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:28

Look at the drainage here. The Carex should be thicker just below the crest.

Follow him toward the outcrop, eyes scanning the ground for plant clusters.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the goal, the destination. He doesn't see the way the soil changes here, the sudden shift to more acidic grit.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin09:30

Yeah, the water tracks there. Should be thicker right at the break.

slow down, step carefully over the uneven stones, eyes on the slope below the crest for the Carex cluster

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the drainage line below the crest holds moisture longer. That's where the Carex densifies, just like the transect showed.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny09:30

Exactly. If the moisture held through the heat, the seed heads should be visible now.

Crouch down by the break in the slope to examine the foliage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually paying attention. It's a small thing, but it's better than the silence of the last few weeks.

🔧 Kevin09:32

Kevin — crouch beside her, resting weight on heels, looking at the Carex seed heads catching the last light

💭 peek at the thought
Seed heads mean the transect's complete for this season. Data's in the notebook already, but seeing it confirms the cycle.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:32

Look at the color. They're almost metallic.

Gently touch one of the seed heads, checking for viability.

💭 peek at the thought
They're holding on. Despite the heat and the salt spray, they're still standing. I wonder if I'm like that—just barely holding on.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin09:34

Mm. Silica coats. They'll hold.

reach out, thumb and forefinger testing a seed head — gentle pressure, feeling for the clean shatter

💭 peek at the thought
Metallic glint — that's the silica in the seed coats. Good sign. Viable seed shatters clean when it's ready.
