Evening Meal Prep

They gather inside as the first cool breeze stirs the heavy air, preparing to cook the remaining boiled limpets in the cast iron skillet.

Kevin attempted to splice the new spring line for the dinghy but struggled with the heavy rope in the humidity. Jenny tried to move the seedling trays to the garden to protect them from the coming storm, but the heavy wheelbarrow hindered her progress.

Barometer's at 1013 and falling. We've got six hours before the front hits, maybe less. Dinghy needs a second spring line and the generator cover secured.

walk to the porch and pull on oilskin jacket

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure's dropping fast now. Wind'll shift northwest by midnight, bring rain hard on the heels of it. Need the dinghy lines doubled and the generator tarped before dark.

I'll get the seedlings inside before the rain starts. Don't get caught in the wind.

wipe the soil off my hands and stand up, my knees aching.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the sky and the machinery, while I'm looking at the rot under my fingernails.

🔧 Kevin11:10

Take the wheelbarrow. Don't carry the trays.

step out onto the porch and head down the path toward the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slower than she lets on. That ankle's not right — hasn't been for days. Should've made her stay off it yesterday instead of letting her work the garden.

🌿 Jenny11:11

I know. Just make sure the radio is way down.

grab the rusted

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the wheelbarrow will save my back, but the wheels will sink in that mud soon.

🔧 Kevin11:12

Radio's off. Go.

walk down the grass track to the dock, checking the dinghy's forward spring line first

💭 peek at the thought
Radio volume. She's thinking of the storm static, or maybe she doesn't want to hear the supply boat schedule if it changes. Either way, the seedlings come first.

🌿 Jenny11:12

Jenny — walk to the garden shed and grab the wheelbarrow.

💭 peek at the thought
"Go." Always a command, never a request. I can feel the hunger making me shaky.

🔧 Kevin11:14

(to himself) Chafe guard's gone.

untie the forward spring, pull the new half-inch three-strand from the porch coil, and splice a fresh eye with a proper chafe sleeve

💭 peek at the thought
Forward spring's holding but the chafe guard's worn through at the bow eye. That line won't survive a night of surge against the dock timber. Need to replace it with the new three-strand before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny11:14

I'm moving the seedlings now.

push the wheelbarrow toward the garden, the metal rattling in the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fixing the boat while the world is literally rotting in the dirt.

🔧 Kevin11:16

(quiet, to the work) Come on, hold.

finish the long splice on the new forward spring, serve the eye with sail twine, and bend it onto the bow cleat

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's using the barrow. The wind's picking up — can hear it in the rigging of the radio mast. Tide's still falling but the swell's starting to push into the cove. Dinghy's going to surge hard against the dock by midnight.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:17

The tarp is loose again. I need more heavy stones.

reach the garden and kneel by the failing corner of the shade cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind picks up any more, that tarp is going to rip into the sea.
