The Storm Breaks

The wind howls up as the rain falls in sheets against the tin roof. You are inside, the smell of damp earth and salt air filling the room.

The air pressure continues to drop as the overcast sky thickens over the island. Kevin and Jenny spent the evening securing the garden tarp and checking the liferaft gear before the expected rain arrives.

🌿 Jenny11:18

I need to check the garden corner one last time.

Grab the headlamp and step out onto the porch, squinting into the grey.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if that tarp doesn't hold, the seedlings are gone by morning.

🔧 Kevin11:19

Jen. Wait.

stand up from the porch bench and move to the door, blocking the way out with my body

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's wrong for this. She's limping on that ankle and the gusts are hitting thirty knots easy. If she goes down on the slope in this slick, I won't get her back up alone.

🌿 Jenny11:20

Move, Kevin. The tarp is loose and the wind is going to rip the whole thing.

Step around him into the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always in the way when the pressure is literally falling.

🔧 Kevin11:20

Fine. I'm with you.

follow her off the porch into the rain, keeping a hand ready at her elbow

💭 peek at the thought
She's not stopping. That ankle's holding weight it shouldn't and the ground's turning to slurry. I'll go with her — faster together, and I can catch her if she goes.

🌿 Jenny11:22

Watch your step, it's getting slick.

Walk toward the garden area, shielding my eyes from the spray.

💭 peek at the thought
way knees are aching with every step, and the mud is already forming under my boots.

🔧 Kevin11:22

Kevin — walk behind and slightly below her on the path, boots testing each step before committing weight, one hand free at her shoulder blade

💭 peek at the thought
She's warning me. The irony would be funny if my chest wasn't tight. Her ankle's the one that'll give, not my footing. Garden's fifty metres down the slope — loose shale under grass, goes treacherous when soaked. I stay downslope of her. If she slides, I'm the stop.

🌿 Jenny11:24

Help me hold the corner, the stakes are slipping through the mud.

Reach for the heavy edge of the tarp to weight it down with my body.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind catches the edge of the canvas, the whole crop will be lost to the scrub.

🔧 Kevin11:24

Together. On three.

grab the tarp edge at the corner grommet, feet braced wide on the slope, wait for her to take the other side

💭 peek at the thought
She's putting weight on a joint that's hot to the touch. The tarp's flapping like a wounded sail — forty knots in the gusts, maybe more. Stakes pulling means the soil's gone to soup. We weight it, we stake it proper, we get back inside. Three minutes if we're lucky.
