walk to the ridge shrine

They leave the cottage together in the late afternoon, moving up the ridge path toward the ring of weathered stones. The sky is a low grey ceiling, wind picking up from the southwest. The path is slick with mud from earlier rain. They carry no packs, just the letter to Tom in Kevin's oilskin pocket and Jenny's notebook tucked under her arm.

Kevin and Jenny walked the ridge path to the old shrine in the evening wind, checked the radio mast from high ground and found the insulator holding, then stood together in the stone ring examining the salt-eroded carvings that begin with the letter E.

Sky's dropping. We'll want to be back before dark.

walk up the ridge path toward the old shrine, boots finding purchase on the slick stone

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifting southwest, bringing salt and the smell of coming rain. My leg aches where the cold settles in the joint. The letter feels heavier than paper should be.

🌿 Jenny12:07

It's already dropping. We're just adding more distance.

walk beside him, clutching the notebook tight to my side to keep it dry.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is cramping. I should have eaten more of those limpets.

🔧 Kevin12:08

Radio aerial took a beating last blow. Want eyes on it from the high ground.

keep climbing, scanning the mast silhouette against the grey as the ridge flattens out

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. But the ridge clears the tree line and the radio mast needs checking before the front hits proper. Two birds.

🌿 Jenny12:08

I'll look. Just don't expect me to be a telescope.

stop for a second to trace the edge of a weathered stone with my thumb, feeling for the carved letters.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the hardware. I wonder if he even noticed the way the light is hitting the lichen on these rocks.

🔧 Kevin12:10

Not asking for a telescope. Just a look.

stop beside her, hands in pockets, wind tugging at the oilskin hem, waiting

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers find the grooves I've traced a dozen times. Names worn to suggestion. She reads them differently than I do — sees people, not markers.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:10

Fine. Let's just get it over with.

look up toward the lighthouse ridge, squinting against the wind to find the radio mast.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so blunt it's like a wall. I can't even get a rise out of him today.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin12:12

Insulator's holding. Stays tight.

turn toward the stone ring, boots sinking slightly in the wet turf, the letter pressing against my chest through the oilskin pocket

💭 peek at the thought
Mast's there. Porcelain insulator I fitted last month shows white against the dark. Stays look taut. Good. One less thing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:12

Good. Then we're wasting time.

step into the center of the stone ring, looking down at the worn names in the rock.

💭 peek at the thought
He's thinking about that letter. He can feel it there, and he knows I know it's there.

🔧 Kevin12:14

Kevin — step into the ring beside her, shoulders almost touching, looking down at the carved stone beneath her boots

💭 peek at the thought
She stands in the middle like she belongs there. Like the names mean something to her beyond entries in a log. The wind flattens her hair against her cheek. I should say something. Don't know what.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:14

They've been here a long time. Long enough for the wind to eat the names.

crouch down slowly, ignoring the pinch in my ankle, to get a closer look at the carvings.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too close. I can feel the heat coming off him, and it makes the silence feel heavier.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin12:16

Not the wind. The salt. Gets in the grain and splits it.

crouch down beside her, one hand braced on my knee, the other resting on the cold stone near her fingers

💭 peek at the thought
The names — Johansen 1893, M. Kowalski 1901, three others I can't read anymore. Salt and wind don't care who you were. My knees creak as I crouch beside her. The letter burns in my pocket.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:16

I know how salt works, Kevin.

stay still, staring at the pitted surface of the stone, my breath hitching slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
His hand is heavy. I want to pull away, but I don't want to be the one to break the contact.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin12:18

Didn't mean —

stop, jaw tight, hand falling from the stone to rest on my thigh

💭 peek at the thought
Sharp. Not angry — something else. She knows I wasn't teaching. Just... talking. Filling space. The silence stretches, full of things we don't say. My thumb finds the edge of the letter through the oilskin.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:18

It's fine.

lean my shoulder into his, just for a second, while looking at the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to apologize, but he doesn't know how to do it without sounding like he's arguing.
