Evening at the cottage

Night has fallen. Kevin and Jenny are in the keeper's cottage: the wood stove is lit, a pot of limpets simmers on top, the letter to Tom sits sealed on the table, and the wind rattles the porch door against its cedar shim.

The air is heavy and humid, smelling of the coming rain as the clouds thicken over the flat sky. Jenny moves through the dark, clutching the bags of damping-off seedlings to her chest, while Kevin watches from the doorframe, noting the shift in the wind coming from the west.

🌿 Jenny12:21

I'm going to burn the diseased seedlings. I don't want the spores lingering in the soil.

Pick up the newspaper bags containing the damping-off cells and move toward the porch door.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of the limpets is too strong tonight. Everything feels tight—the air, the house, the silence between us.

Want me to get the door?

stand up from the table and step toward the porch door, hand reaching for the latch

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's picking up. Door's still catching on that shim — she'll need a hand getting it open with both bags.

🌿 Jenny12:22

I've got it.

Step slightly to the side to maintain a gap between us and reach for the door latch myself.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful, but I can't stand the thought of him seeing how small the loss is—five little cells of nothing.

🔧 Kevin12:22

Kevin — stay where I am, watching her work the latch against the pressure

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn as ever. The shim's holding but the wind's got teeth tonight — she'll feel it when that door catches.

🌿 Jenny12:24

It's going to rain hard.

Open the door and step out into the humid air, clutching the bags of seedlings.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up. The barometer is dropping too fast for me to feel safe out here in the dark.

🔧 Kevin12:24

Take the headlamp. Hook's by the door.

reach up to the nail by the porch frame and lift the LED headlamp off its hook, holding it out toward her

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's been falling all afternoon. She reads it same as me. The bags are light — just paper and sick dirt — but the wind'll snatch them if she's not careful on the porch steps.

🌿 Jenny12:26

Thanks.

Take the headlamp from his hand and adjust the band over my head, the beam cutting through the dark toward the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't see where I'm stepping, I'll trip over the roots in the garden.

🔧 Kevin12:26

Watch the wood pile. Wind's shifting west.

lean against the doorframe, one hand braced on the jamb, tracking her progress across the porch steps

💭 peek at the thought
Beam catches the garden tarp flapping — one corner still loose from this afternoon. She'll burn the bags at the fire pit behind the shed, same as always. Wind'll carry sparks toward the wood pile if she's not watching.
