Rising Humidity and the Fungus

Kevin and Jenny stand over the seedling trays as the rain drums steadily against the tin roof. Jenny points to the white fuzz on the pepper cells while Kevin watches the falling needle on the barometer.

Kevin inspects the seedling trays on the porch and finds white fungal fuzz spreading across the pepper and lettuce cells. Jenny checks the barometer and notes the pressure is slowly rising despite the clear sky. They move the healthy tomato trays to the raised shelf to increase airflow before the humidity worsens further.

Look at the mycelium, Kevin. It's already reached the stems.

Point to the white fuzz on the pepper seedlings and pull the newspaper bags closer to her chest.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the barometer again. He's calculating the storm while I'm calculating the loss.

Tomatoes still clean?

walk to the seedling trays and crouch down to examine the pepper and lettuce cells closely, checking the tomato and basil cells for any sign of spread

💭 peek at the thought
The damping-off's moved faster than I expected. Three pepper cells and two lettuce gone overnight. Barometer's still falling — 1008 now — and this humidity's exactly what the fungus wants. Need to get the surviving trays into drier air before we lose the tomatoes too.

🌿 Jenny12:34

For now. But if the humidity doesn't drop, they're next.

Lean over the trays, carefully inspecting the base of the tomato stems for any sign of collapse.

💭 peek at the thought
He's checking for the spread. He knows how this works, even if he doesn't say it.

Moving the healthy trays to the porch. You want to bag the rest now or after?

pick up the tomato and basil seedling trays and carry them out to the porch, setting them on the raised shelf where the air moves

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The tomatoes are clean today, but with the barometer at 1008 and falling, this damp isn't lifting. The garden tarp's flapping loose at one corner — that's not helping. Need to seal the trays off from the ground moisture and get air moving through them. The porch has better ventilation.

🌿 Jenny12:36

Now. I'm taking them out to the pit before the rain gets heavier.

Pick up the newspaper bags containing the diseased seedlings and walk toward the door.

💭 peek at the thought
He's acting. Finally. I can't let the spores linger in the air of the kitchen.

🔧 Kevin12:36

I'll widen the vent gaps on the covers. Back in a minute.

adjust the ventilation covers on the tomato and basil trays, propping them open wider with small wooden spacers to increase airflow

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Burn pit's the right call — don't want spores drifting back over the garden. The porch shelf'll hold the tomatoes and basil above the worst of the damp. Should check the ventilation gaps on the tray covers while I'm at it, maybe prop them wider. Barometer's not going to turn around before dark.

🌿 Jenny12:38

Jenny — walk out onto the porch and head toward the fire pit, clutching the bags of moldy seedlings.

💭 peek at the thought
Thank you for noticing the airflow. Now I just need to get these gone before I start thinking about how many we've lost.
