The Evening Meal
They eat the boiled limpets in silence, the flickering light of the stove casting long shadows against the walls. Outside, the tide begins to turn, the water lapping softly against the dock pilings.
The south-east wind lashes against the cottage walls, bringing a fine mist of spray from the reef. Inside, the air is heavy with the smell of drying herbs and salt air. The tide is rising steadily, pushing against the stone steps outside.
