← Day 217

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Midday work at dock and garden

Kevin is at the dock fitting bronze sleeves to the Yanmar lower unit and inspecting the mooring ring; Jenny is at the garden testing soil pH and preparing to boil limpets.

Kevin fitted the bronze sleeves to the Yanmar lower unit and reinforced the mooring ring at the dock, while Jenny boiled the remaining limpets for dinner in the garden. Both worked independently, finishing their tasks before the afternoon.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You sit at the dock bench with the Yanmar lower unit clamped, the bronze sleeves laid out beside the micrometer. The landward mooring ring shifts when you lean on it — the mortise is worn oval. You'll need to drive a wedge or sister a new beam before the supply boat arrives.

🔧 Kevin23:12

Kevin — fit bronze sleeves to Yanmar lower unit, measure clearances with micrometer, pressure-test seals

💭 peek at the thought
Three thou on the sleeves. Good. The micrometer doesn't lie. But that mooring ring — mortise worn oval, shifts under body weight. Supply boat in seven days. If she comes in heavy, the ring pulls out and takes the beam with it. Need to drive oak wedges in the mortise, sister a scrap of that spruce spar alongside. Do it before the tide turns again.

🔧 Kevin23:16

Kevin — cut two oak wedges from scrap, drive them into the worn mortise of the landward mooring ring to take up play, sister a piece of the spruce spar alongside the beam with through-bolts and washers, secure with nyloc nuts

💭 peek at the thought
Sleeves seated. Tolerance holds. Pump turned by hand — smooth, no bind. Seals look intact. Pressure test rigged with the hand pump and a length of hose; no drop over two minutes. Good enough for now. Mooring ring still loose. Need to act before the wind backs.

🔧 Kevin23:20

Kevin — inspect the seaward mooring ring and its beam for the same wear, test under load

💭 peek at the thought
Wedges driven home — ring's solid now, no shift under full weight. Sister beam bolted tight with the spruce spar offcut, three through-bolts with washers and nylocs. The dock'll hold the supply boat even if she comes in hard. Hands are sore from the sledge. Tide's still rising. Should check the seaward ring too while I'm down here, but the light's holding.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You stand by the garden wall with the pH kit, the reading steady at 6.9. The tarp holds. You carry the bucket of limpets to the wood stove, set water to boil, and wipe the seed tin shelf dry — the heirloom packets are crisp now, ready for labeling.

🌿 Jenny23:14

Jenny — make list: Heirloom Planting Schedule (Potatoes: planted; Onions: weeding; Basil/Tomato: established; Peppers/Lettuce: failed/burned)

💭 peek at the thought
6.9. Perfect. The lime held. Now I just have to stop being afraid of the soil.

🌿 Jenny23:18

Jenny — scoop limpets from the pot into a bowl and walk toward the porch to see if Kevin is still at the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets are bubbling. My stomach is actually growling, which is a good sign, I suppose. I wonder if Kevin's still obsessing over those sleeves or if he's finally come up for air.

🌿 Jenny23:22

Jenny — sit on the porch steps and eat the limpets, watching the waves hit the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The steam is hitting my face. I need to eat before the rain actually breaks. If the pressure keeps dropping, the garden is going to be a mess anyway.
