Evening at the table

The heat has finally dropped as the sun dips below the ridge. Kevin and Jenny sit at the table with the boiled limpets and the remaining corned beef.

The evening air is heavy with 31°C heat as the light onshore breeze carries the salt of the sea. Inside the cottage, the scent of drying mint and boiled limpets fills the space. Jenny sits opposite Kevin, her hands trembling slightly over the rusted heirloom tin, the weight of the falling barometer pressure reflecting a subtle shift in the coming days.

🔧 Kevin00:30

Eat up. Tomorrow I'll run the Yanmar on the dinghy proper — put an hour on it under load. See if the sleeves hold.

pick up a limpet shell, extract the meat with the tip of my knife, dip it in the corned beef fat, and eat it

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets are tender, the fat rich. Good meal. Jenny's quiet today — tired, or thinking. The supply boat's six days out if it keeps schedule. Barometer's still falling. Need to get the letter to Tom finished and in the post bag before the boat leaves the mainland.

🌿 Jenny00:30

I hope they hold. I don't think I have the heart to pull that engine out of the mount again.

Eat a piece of corned beef, then glance toward the rusted tin on the stove shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about the engine again. It's his sanctuary—everything fits, everything has a tolerance. I'm starving, but the thought of the seeds is making my stomach tighten.

🔧 Kevin00:32

The mount's solid. The doubler plate and through-bolts aren't going anywhere. It's just the sleeves — three thou clearance, bronze to cast. They'll bed in.

reach for another limpet, work the meat free, eat it slow

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at the tin. The one marked 'E'. She put it there herself, up on the stove shelf where it's dry and visible. Hasn't opened it. Hasn't said why. I've asked once. She didn't answer. Won't ask again until she's ready.

🌿 Jenny00:32

Precision is great for engines, Kev. It's less helpful with the soil.

Push a limpet around the plate with a fork, not eating it.

💭 peek at the thought
Three thou. He's living in the microns again. He's so precise it's almost an insult to the rest of this place.

🔧 Kevin00:34

Soil's not metal. You don't torque it to spec. You watch, you adjust, you lose some, you keep some.

wipe my fingers on the cloth, pour the last of the coffee from the pot into my mug, drink it black

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about soil. She's talking about the seedlings — the damping-off in the pepper and lettuce cells. The heat, the humidity, the fungus that comes no matter how careful you are. She blames herself for things she can't control. I've seen it before.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:34

I'm tired of losing some.

Set the fork down and stand up, walking over to the stove shelf to touch the lid of the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be practical. He's trying to bridge the gap with a metaphor, but he doesn't understand that losing some is exactly what I'm afraid of.

🔧 Kevin00:36

You've kept the tomatoes alive. The basil. The succulents. The bird. That's not losing.

stand, take my plate and hers to the sink, run the pump handle, wash them in the cold water

💭 peek at the thought
There it is. The weight of eleven months — the garden half weeds, the seedlings damping off, the supply boat late, the radio silence, the tin on the shelf she won't open. She carries it different than me. I compartmentalize: engine, dock, radio, letter. She holds it all at once. Her back's bad again; I saw her favour it at the garden this morning. Didn't say.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:36

Those were the easy ones.

Pick up the seed tin and carry it back to the table, setting it down with a heavy metallic thud.

💭 peek at the thought
He's counting the survivors. He thinks the math adds up, but he doesn't see the empty cells in the trays or the gaps in the garden.

🔧 Kevin00:38

The peppers and lettuce. Damping-off's a bastard in this heat. Not your fault.

dry my hands on the towel, pull out the chair opposite her, sit down, wait

💭 peek at the thought
The tin hits the table. Heavy. Sealed. Rust blooming at the seam but the solder holds. She's never opened it in front of me. Found it in the shrine among the standing stones — said the inscription 'E' meant nothing, just a mark. But she carried it back like something fragile. Put it on the stove shelf. Looks at it daily. Now she's brought it down.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:38

My grandmother grew these in a garden that survived three wars and a flood. They're stubborn. I just... I don't want to be the one who fails them.

Run a thumb over the rusted 'E' on the lid, then slowly begin to pry the seal open with a fingernail.

💭 peek at the thought
He's waiting. He knows what's in the tin, or at least what it represents. He's actually being patient for once.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin00:40

You're not failing them. You're learning them. Different soil, different light, different pests. Takes seasons.

lean forward on my elbows, watch her hands on the lid, say nothing

💭 peek at the thought
Three wars and a flood. She's told me pieces — Odesa, the black soil, her grandmother's hands teaching her to save seed before she could read. The tin survived the journey here. The crate was waterlogged when it washed up; everything else in it turned to pulp or rust. This stayed dry. Sealed. She's opening it now. In front of me. First time.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:40

I just want to know if this island actually wants me here.

Use the edge of a butter knife to pop the final seal of the tin, then lift the lid just a crack to smell the dry, papery scent of the seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right. I'm treating this like a lab experiment instead of a life. But the stakes feel different when the seeds are the only thing left of her.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin00:42

The island doesn't want or not want. It just is. You're here. The tomatoes say yes. The basil says yes. The bird says yes.

reach across the table, cover her free hand with mine, rough calluses against her fingers, hold steady

💭 peek at the thought
The question hangs. Not about the seeds. About us. The contract, the isolation, the supply boat that doesn't come, the radio that crackles with nothing. She's asking the island. She's asking me. The tin breathes — old paper, dried herb, something floral beneath. Heirloom. Survivor. Like her grandmother's garden.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:42

(A small, breathless laugh) You're such a pragmatist. It's infuriating.

Turn my hand over to grip his, squeezing back, and then fully lift the lid of the tin to reveal the packets.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to anchor me. He thinks the evidence is in the growth, but the evidence is in the effort.
