Night watch over the chick
Kevin and Jenny are in the cottage's main room, the wood stove banked for the night. The seabird chick's box sits on the table beside a dimming lantern, the hot water bottle cooling. Outside, the wind has dropped. The barometer holds at 1015. They take turns watching the chick, waiting to see if it survives until morning.
Kevin warmed a hot-water bottle and placed it near the seabird chick while Jenny monitored its condition. The chick absorbed some warmth but remained weak and shivering. Kevin set a snap trap behind the flour sacks with corned beef bait, and Jenny checked the pantry trap, finding a dead mouse.
I'll check the stove. See if there's embers left for a fresh bottle.
walk to the wood stove and open the damper, feeling for residual heat in the firebox

Don't make the water too hot. You'll shock him.
I reach out and adjust the cloth wrapped around the chick's shivering body, watching its tiny chest rise and fall.

Blood-warm. I know.
pull the kettle from the stove's cool edge, test a few drops on my inner wrist, then fill the rubber bottle halfway and wrap it in a fresh cloth

Put it here. Close.
I carefully slide the warm bottle near the edge of the box, careful not to touch the bird directly.
