Morning pressure drop and the smell of ripening fruit

Kevin and Jenny stand on the cottage porch as the barometer reads 1020 hPa and falling, the flat sky pressing down over the island. The air carries a sweet, fermenting scent drifting from the woods — fruit ripening in the undergrowth, heavy and cloying on the still morning. The Yanmar engine sits mounted on the dinghy at the dock, the bronze sleeve machined and waiting for its test-fit once the epoxy on the housing threads finishes curing.

Kevin attempts to test-fit the bronze sleeve on the Yanmar shaft but finds the epoxy is still too tacky to proceed. Jenny spends the morning drafting a letter to Tom, noting the approaching storm as the pressure drops.

Barometer's dropping. Air's dead still. We've got weather coming.

walk down to the dock to inspect the dinghy's mooring lines and the Yanmar mount

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's falling faster than I'd like. That sweet rot from the woods means the wind's still — no mixing. Storm's building out there somewhere. Epoxy needs another hour at least, but the sleeve's ready. Should check the dinghy's mooring lines before the supply boat tries to come in.

I'll move the seedlings under the eaves. Check the bolts on the mount again.

Walk to the garden, pick up the sea-beet trays, and carry them to the sheltered side of the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if it hits 1015, the sea-beets will rot before the boat arrives.

🔧 Kevin03:42

Right.

crouch at the dinghy transom, wrench in hand, and systematically check each Yanmar mount bolt for torque and the cutless bearing flange for play

💭 peek at the thought
She's already moving on the seedlings. Good. The mount bolts were torqued yesterday but vibration loosens things. Need to check each one, and the cutless bearing alignment while I'm at it. The sleeve won't mean anything if the housing shifts.

(calling out) Don't forget the spring line!

Set the seedling trays carefully against the whitewashed wall and look toward the treeline.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the machine. I can smell that fermenting fruit from here; something's over-ripening in the woods, maybe the wild plums.

🔧 Kevin03:44

Checked it yesterday. Splice held.

finish the last mount bolt, stand, and walk the dinghy's length to inspect the forward spring line's chafe guard and the stern line's serve, testing each with a hard pull

💭 peek at the thought
Spring line. Right. The new half-inch three-strand with the long splice. If the swell builds from the southeast it'll saw through the old chafe point in an hour.

🌿 Jenny03:44

I'm going to boil the limpets. I'm starving.

Wipe soil from my hands and head into the kitchen to start the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is too heavy. That stillness is a held breath before the sky breaks.
