Evening Meal

Kevin and Jenny meet at the stove as the sun begins to dip. The smell of boiled limpets fills the small kitchen.

The heat is a physical weight, pressing down on the shrine as the air shimmers above the sand. The tide is receding, exposing the slick rocks of the northern shelf, while the atmosphere remains heavy and still, smelling of salt and drying seaweed.

🔧 Kevin05:02

Smells done.

walk into the kitchen and pull out a chair at the table

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's here. The smell means food's ready and I don't have to ask.

🌿 Jenny05:02

Finally. I thought the heat would kill me before the hunger did.

walk to the stove and start plating the limpets

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is cramping. I can't think straight when I'm this hungry.

🔧 Kevin05:04

Dock held. Wedges bit clean. Ring's solid for tomorrow.

sit at the table and wait for the plate

💭 peek at the thought
She's tired too. Heat takes more out of you than the work does.

🌿 Jenny05:04

Good. I don't want to spend tomorrow morning fishing the boat out of the surf.

set the plate of limpets in front of him and sit down heavily in the opposite chair

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about the ring, but he's not looking at me. Everything is a task, a fix, a measurement.

🔧 Kevin05:06

Boat won't come if the front hits. Barometer's still rising.

pick up a limpet, work the meat out with the small fork, eat it

💭 peek at the thought
She's worried about the boat. The storm front building west. She doesn't say it but she's thinking it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:06

It's too hot for a front. The air is just... stuck.

pick up a limpet and stare at it for a second before eating it slowly

💭 peek at the thought
He's always checking the pressure. Always predicting the weather, never the mood in the room.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin05:08

Rising barometer doesn't lie. Front's west, moving slow. Could hold off two days. Could turn tonight.

eat another limpet, chew slowly, watch her face

💭 peek at the thought
She feels it too. That heavy stillness before something breaks. The barometer says one thing, the air says another.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:08

Then we'll be ready. We're always ready for something to break.

look up and meet his eyes, then look away quickly to reach for the water pitcher

💭 peek at the thought
I can feel him watching me. He's waiting for me to say something—anything—that isn't about the weather or the engine.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin05:10

Not everything breaks.

reach for the water pitcher, pour into both glasses, slide one across the table to her

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the boat or the front. She means us. The silence. The letter in my pocket. The garden I never built.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:10

No? I've spent the last hour sorting seeds that almost rotted in a tin.

take a sip of the water and lean back in the chair, watching him over the rim of the glass

💭 peek at the thought
Is that a challenge or a promise? He's trying. He's actually trying to say something real.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin05:12

The ones that matter made it. Peppers and lettuce went to damping-off. Tomatoes and basil held. You did that.

drink water, set the glass down, pick up another limpet

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The tin was rusted, the packets damp. But she saved them. She always saves what she can.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:12

I just saved what I could. The island almost took them.

put the fork down and look at my hands stained with dirt and salt

💭 peek at the thought
He noticed the seeds. For once, he didn't just see the mess of the sorting table.
