Evening at the cottage

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch as dusk settles. The generator hums steady behind them. Kevin has the letter to Tom in hand, considering a third sentence. Jenny holds her notebook open to the sea-beet sketches, the northern shelf cluster mapped at low tide. The tide is high now, lapping the dock pilings, and the fish run moves through the shallows off the dock.

The evening heat lingers inside the cottage as the trade wind holds a steady pace. Kevin brings the rusted tin inside, the metal clinking against the wooden table, while Jenny tends the draft of the wood stove. The air is thick with the salt scent of the rising tide lapping rhythmically against the dock pilings outside.

🌿 Jenny05:53

The tide is coming in higher than usual.

Trace the edge of a sea beet sketch in the notebook with a charcoal pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
If the sea beets don't take to the shelf, I'm just a woman cataloging a graveyard.

🔧 Kevin05:53

Not a spring tide. Barometer says high pressure holding.

lean forward on the porch step, letter folded between thumb and forefinger, eyes on the water lapping the dock pilings

💭 peek at the thought
The water's right up to the dock planks. Not spring tide high, but higher than the marks I cut last month. Barometer's still climbing — 1030 and rising. That's not a storm front. Something else pushing water in.

🌿 Jenny05:54

It doesn't stop the humidity.

Close the notebook and watch the dark line of the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is rising, but the air still feels heavy enough to drown.

🔧 Kevin05:54

No. It doesn't.

unfold the letter slowly, read the two sentences again, then fold it back and set it on the step beside me

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the tide. She's talking about the quiet between us. The letter in my pocket. The notebook she closed. Eleven months and the things we don't say outnumber the ones we do.

🌿 Jenny05:56

I should check the traps again tomorrow.

Stand up and stretch, feeling the ache in my lower back.

💭 peek at the thought
He's waiting for me to say something I don't have words for.

🔧 Kevin05:56

I'll check them. You've done the pantry three days running.

pick up the folded letter, turn it over in my hands, then tuck it into my shirt pocket

💭 peek at the thought
Traps. Rat in the pantry. Mouse in the snap trap. She's giving me an out — something to do, somewhere to be. The back ache's real; I saw her favouring it at the garden yesterday. But she's also not asking about the letter. Not asking about Tom. Not asking why the third sentence won't come.

🌿 Jenny05:58

The seeds are getting damp anyway.

Walk into the kitchen to start the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He notices the things, even when we aren't talking.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:59

I'll bring the tin in. The 'E' one. Before dew settles.

rise from the step, walk to the porch shelf, lift the rusted tin marked 'E' and carry it through the doorway into the kitchen

💭 peek at the thought
Seeds getting damp. The heirloom packets on the porch. The sea-beet envelope. Humidity at 31 degrees with a rising barometer — condensation forms on anything metal or paper by midnight. She's moving to the stove because there's nothing else to say. Because the kitchen puts a wall between us. Because lighting a fire is a task with a beginning and an end.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:00

I thought you were leaving that there.

Step back from the stove to give him room to set the tin down.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't believe he actually brought it back from the shrine.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin06:00

Changed my mind. Tin seals better than the envelope.

set the tin on the kitchen table, lid tight, then move to the wood stove and check the draft without looking at her

💭 peek at the thought
She noticed. The tin's been on the porch shelf for weeks — the shrine tin, the one I left at the standing stones, the one that washed back up in the crate. I set it there deliberately. A marker. A boundary. Now I'm moving it because she said seeds are damp and the letter's tucked underneath it in my pocket and I don't want her seeing either.
