Afternoon Heat Break

The sun begins its slow descent, casting long shadows across the garden as you meet at the cottage porch to discuss the water levels and the supply boat arrival.

Kevin spent the afternoon inspecting the dock's mooring ring and checking the traps near the cottage. Jenny focused on the sea beet propagation trays on the porch, documenting the growth progress in her notebook.

Three-ninety-one in the tank. Boat's nine days out if the weather holds. Barometer's steady but it'll drop.

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's holding at 391. Nine days out on the boat if the front holds. Pressure's steady at 1032 but the drop's coming — can feel it in the joints. Should top off from the spring tomorrow before the swell builds.

🌿 Jenny06:39

The water is enough, but I need to finish that mooring ring before the boat gets here or I'm losing the dinghy.

I wipe soil from my way onto my apron and look out at the sea beet seedlings.

💭 peek at the thought
Nine days is a long time for the engine to fail or for the dock to come loose.

🔧 Kevin06:40

Wedges held last cycle. Crane load's different. Need a through-plate on the ring bolt before they lift.

walk to the dock, testing the ring's play with my boot

💭 peek at the thought
Ring's loose in the mortise. Three cedar wedges driven in yesterday held through the last tide cycle but the supply boat's crane will put different load on it. Need to sister the bolt proper with a through-plate before they winch anything heavy aboard.

🌿 Jenny06:40

Then I'll find the metal plate from the workshop; I need to Ensure the bolts take the tension properly.

I follow him to the dock, watching the way the wood groans under his weight.

💭 peek at the thought
If the crane pulls and the wedges shear, the whole assembly comes right out with the wood.

🔧 Kevin06:42

Generator mount plate in the workshop. Four holes drilled. Back it with washers and nylocs through the stringer.

crouch at the ring mortise, probing the wood with the tip of my knife to find solid grain

💭 peek at the thought
She's already thinking ahead. Good. The workshop has that 6mm galvanized plate from the generator mount — four bolt holes already drilled. If we back it with washers and nylocs through the stringer, the ring won't pull out even under crane load.

🌿 Jenny06:42

I'll get the plate, but we might need to sister that section first if the rot is too deep.

I turn and head toward the cottage to grab the plate and the wrenches.

💭 peek at the thought
If the stringer is too soft, the bolts will just pull through like wet cardboard.

🔧 Kevin06:44

Sound wood three feet back. Plate'll span it.

stay crouched, clearing debris from the mortise with the knife tip, exposing the bolt shank

💭 peek at the thought
Stringer's sound three feet back from the ring. Sistering's extra work we don't need if the plate spans to good wood. She'll see it when she gets back with the plate.

🌿 Jenny06:44

I'll get the plate and the nylocs; don't stress the ring any further.

I walk back to the cottage, my mind already sketching the layout of the reinforcement.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the span, but I've seen how fast salt eats own.

🔧 Kevin06:46

Kevin — stand, wiping the knife on my thigh, and walk back toward the cottage for the crowbar

💭 peek at the thought
Ring's quiet now. Good. Mortise is packed with salt-crusted sawdust — old wedges crushed to powder. Need to clean it out proper before the new plate seats. Knife's too slow. Crowbar's at the cottage. She's got the plate. I'll meet her halfway.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:46

Be careful with the pry work. I need those wedges intact for the final fit.

I enter the cottage and head for the workshop area to find the generator plate.

💭 peek at the thought
If he uses the Analysisbar too hard, he'll split the remaining cedar wedges.
