Morning dockside work
The high tide laps steadily against the pilings as the first pair of planks is cleared from the walkway.
Kevin and Jenny removed two rotten dock planks, exposing a severely decayed stringer that requires sistering before the tide returns. Kevin tested the Yanmar engine on the dinghy at the dock but it failed to start due to a frayed starter cord near the handle.
Next two planks. You take the landward end, I'll work the seaward side.
pry the next rotten plank free with the crowbar, working from the seaward edge toward center

Don't force it, the joist is shot through.
Jenny kneels on the landward side, wedging the flatshead of her knife under the plank to lift it slightly while Kevin pulls.

Wedge it first. Then pull.
ease off the crowbar and let Jenny's knife wedge lift the plank, then pull steady once the nail breaks free

Slow. Wait for the wood to give.
Jenny leans her weight own the knife handle, watching the metal sink into the grey grain.

Kevin — hold the crowbar ready at the seaward end, waiting for the plank to release before applying pressure

It's too soft to just yank. Let it lift.
Jenny presses the knife deeper into the rot, feeling the fibers crumble under the blade.

Stringer's gone past the plank line. Gotta sister it before the next tide.
watch the plank lift clear, then drop the crowbar and probe the exposed joist with the knife tip to test the rot depth

We need more than just wedges for this.
Jenny runs her thumb along the edge of the joist, feeling where the wood is still solid and where it turns to mush.
