Night 225

The heat finally drops slightly as the sun sets, but the air remains stagnant. You and Jenny sit together in the dim light.

The heat is a physical weight, pressing down on the cottage as the pressure drops. The air is dead, a shimmering haze that signals the coming storm long before the first wind gust. The tide is retreating, exposing the slick rocks of the northern shelf for a final window before the salt water rises.

🌿 Jenny06:56

The barometer is dropping. I hope the wind turns.

Wipe sweat from my forehead with the back of my hand and look out at the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
It's way hot to even breathe, and I can feel the salt drying on my skin.

Mm. Dropped three since lunch. Southwest by midnight if it holds the pattern.

reach for the water jug on the table, pour two metal cups, slide one across to her

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the barometer like I am. Three millibars since noon. The front's coming west but the heat's holding — that's the bad combination. Wind'll shift southwest before midnight, bring the swell with it.

🌿 Jenny06:58

Let's hope it brings more than just heat.

Take the cup and sip the lukewarm water, watching the shadows stretch across the sand.

💭 peek at the thought
If it comes from the southwest, it might actually bring some relief, or just more salt.

Brings the boat. That's what matters.

drink from my own cup, set it down, stand and walk to the porch door to check the barometer by the last light

💭 peek at the thought
She means the supply boat. Nine days overdue on a ten-day cycle. The trust's letter said "delayed" but didn't say why. Could be the mainland dock strike, could be engine trouble, could be they forgot us. Again.

🌿 Jenny07:00

The boat doesn't care if the plants survive the week.

Trace the edge of my notebook with my thumb, thinking about the seeds in the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the exit strategy, while I'm looking at the roots.

🔧 Kevin07:00

The sea beet's the job. Rest is ours.

tap the barometer face — 1027 hPa now, falling steady — then turn back into the kitchen

💭 peek at the thought
The peppers and lettuce are already gone — damping-off took them three days back. Tomatoes and basil holding. Sea beet trays on the porch are the only thing that matters now; they're the contract. The rest is pride.

🌿 Jenny07:02

The garden isn't finished, Kevin.

Stand up slowly and stretch, feeling the ache in my back from the dock work.

💭 peek at the thought
Rest feels like a lie when the island is still breathing down me.

🔧 Kevin07:02

The wall's two courses. Stakes need twine. Lime's by the shed.

pull out the chair opposite her, sit, forearms on the table

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The wall's two courses short on the seaward side. The shade cloth's deployed but the tomato stakes need tying off proper. The lime's still in sacks by the shed. I said I'd finish it before the heat broke. The heat hasn't broken.
