The Engine and the Chick
Kevin is at the dock and Jenny is at the garden.
Kevin tested the dinghy engine under load in the channel and found it running steady at idle and low throttle, though a faint vibration appeared above half throttle. Jenny ate the boiled limpets at the cottage, then checked the sea-beet seedling trays and found the damping-off fungus has spread to two more lettuce cells.
You stand by the dinghy with the engine humming. The fallen seabird chick watches you from the edge of the planks.
Kevin — pick up the chick gently, carry it up to the cottage porch, set it in a cardboard box with a towel and place it near the stove for warmth

Kevin — walk back down to the dock, untie the dinghy's stern line, ease out into the channel and engage forward gear at idle

You are kneeling by the seedling trays. The overcast sky casts a flat, grey light over the garden beds.
Jenny — reach out and gently touch the soil in the sea-beet way trays, checking for dampness or the fuzzy white damping-off.

Jenny — stand up slowly, wipe the soil from my palms onto my trousers, and walk back toward the cottage for the remaining limpets.
