Morning Humidity and Preparation

Kevin and Jenny stand by the shed as the overcast sky hangs heavy over the island. Jenny examines the sea-beet seedling trays while Kevin checks the loose garden tarp that begins to flap in the rising wind.

The morning air is heavy with humidity, the overcast sky pressing down on the garden. Kevin and Jenny work to secure the heavy-duty tarp over the heirloom beds before the predicted wet-season gusts pick up. The tide is high, waves lapping rhythmically against the seaward garden wall.

🔧 Kevin07:56

Going to stake the tarp before the gusts hit proper.

walk to the garden and drive the loose tarp corner stake back in with the heel of my boot, then check the other three corners are holding

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's picking up. Tarp corner's already loose — if I don't stake it now, the whole thing goes and takes the seedlings with it.

🌿 Jenny07:57

Make sure the line is taut; the soil is already saturated enough without a flood.

Squat down to press the earth around the sea-beet seedlings, checking the moisture with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind catches that corner, the seedlings are shredded before the salt spray even hits them.

🔧 Kevin07:58

Kevin — pull the tarp line tight around the stake, wrap it twice and cinch it off with a half hitch, then test the tension with a tug before moving to the next corner

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — saturated ground means the stakes pull easier. Need to tension the line proper, not just hammer it home.

🌿 Jenny07:58

They look strong. No fuzz on the stems this morning.

Gently brush a stray piece of grit off a sea-beet leaf and stand up, rubbing my lower back.

💭 peek at the thought
He's efficient, I'll give him that. But efficiency doesn't make the soil fertile.

🔧 Kevin08:00

Kevin — walk to the shed and fetch the folding stool from inside, then bring it back and set it down by the seedlings for her to sit on if she wants

💭 peek at the thought
Sea-beet's holding. Good sign. Her back's bothering her again — she's been favoring it since yesterday.

🌿 Jenny08:00

Thanks.

Sit slowly on the stool and lean forward to inspect the sea-beet trays again.

💭 peek at the thought
He knows I'm hurting. He doesn't ask, he just puts the stool there.

🔧 Kevin08:02

Slack tide soon. Going to run the dinghy engine under load while the water's flat.

walk toward the dock, wiping hands on my trousers as I go

💭 peek at the thought
She's staying low, watching them close. The damping-off took the peppers and lettuce — she's checking if it's creeping toward the sea-beet. Wind's steady now, tarp's holding. Slack tide in twenty minutes if the charts are right. Dinghy engine still needs its load test.

🌿 Jenny08:03

Keep an eye on the barometer. The wind's shifting.

Reach for my notebook and begin to sketch the structure of a sea-beet leaf, focusing on the salt-crusted veins.

💭 peek at the thought
If he stalls the engine now, we're stuck here for another ten days.

🔧 Kevin08:04

Kevin — pause at the cottage porch, lift the barometer from its hook and glance at the needle — still 1030, holding — then tuck it back and continue to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still steady at 1030, but she's seen the shift first — wind's backing east. If it drops under clear sky, we'd better secure the trays. But the sky's still overcast. Engine test can wait ten minutes while I check the glass.

🌿 Jenny08:04

Jenny — make sketch: Sea beet vein morphology - Day 227

💭 peek at the thought
1030 is steady, but the air feels thick. It's the kind of stillness that precedes a drop.
