Evening at the cottage

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage porch as dusk settles. The seabird chick sleeps in its box near the stove. Kevin has the dinghy tied at the dock, engine idle but vibration noted. Jenny has burned the latest damping-off seedlings. They share the last of the corned beef and limpets, and Kevin picks up the letter to Tom to write the second sentence.

The humidity remains stifling, pressing down on the island as the air refuses to move. The tide is rising, pushing a school of fish into the shallows off the dock, while the damping-off fungus continues to claim the garden's vulnerable seedlings.

I tested the engine under load today. It’s steady till half throttle, then a hum comes up through the transom.

write letter to Tom: "I hope this finds you well, and that the work you’re doing keeps your hands busy and your mind steady."

💭 peek at the thought
The vibration in the prop shaft still bothers me—could be the bracket or the coupling. But the engine’s held, and the dock repair’s holding. Jenny’s quiet again, focused on the seedlings. I’ve got the letter in my hand. One sentence down. Need to say something true, not just fill space.

🌿 Jenny08:40

The humidity is going to break. I can feel it in the salt air.

Sketch the pattern of the damping-off fungus on the edge of the notebook page.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing from the heat, and the smell of those limpets is stuck in my hair.

🔧 Kevin08:42

Yeah, the air’s thick. Feels like it’s gonna break hard tonight.

watch the tide line from the porch, listening for the shift in the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching the sky, feeling the shift. The fungus is spreading—she’s documenting it now, like she used to. I should say something about the weather, keep it simple. The letter can wait a moment.

🌿 Jenny08:43

I lost two more lettuce cells. It's moving fast.

Close the notebook with a snap.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the horizon, never at the things actually dying right in front of us.

🔧 Kevin08:44

It’s taking hold fast. We’ll have to start over with fresh seed when the boat comes.

pour the last of the coffee into two chipped mugs, set one beside her on the porch rail.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s frustrated, but she’s still tracking it. Two more cells gone. The damping-off’s winning in the trays. I don’t know what to say that won’t sound hollow. Better to just be there.

🌿 Jenny08:44

We don't have time to wait ten days.

Reach for the rusted seed tin on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't plant my grandmother's seeds now, they'll just rot in the tin.

🔧 Kevin08:46

Then we use what we’ve got. Open the tin and see what’s still viable.

take the crowbar from the porch hook and lever the lid off the rusted seed tin marked 'E'.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—ten days is too long. The trays are crashing now. If we’re going to save anything, we’ve got to act. She’s going for the heirloom tin—marked 'E'. That’s our best shot. I should back her up, not question it.

🌿 Jenny08:46

They're mostly good. I can save the squash.

Pour a handful of heirloom seeds own the white paper to inspect them for rot.

💭 peek at the thought
The seeds are dry, at least. I can't lose these.
