← Day 227

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Midday work at dock and garden

Kevin is at the dock preparing to repair the mooring ring; Jenny is at the garden checking soil moisture and securing the tarp.

Kevin reinforced the dock mooring ring with salvaged planks and cedar wedges. Jenny secured a loose garden tarp and checked the soil moisture near her seedlings.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand on the dock planks, wheelbarrow beside you with three sound cores and three cedar wedges. The mooring ring shifts in its mortise when you test it. The tide is falling, water lapping low on the pilings. You have the nail puller, a mallet, and the copper nails from the last repair.

🔧 Kevin08:17

Kevin — pull the nail puller and mallet from the wheelbarrow, kneel at the mooring ring, and start removing the old fastenings from the worn mortise timbers.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's giving me room to work — another hour before it turns. Ring's loose because the mortise walls are worn oval, not because the timber's failed. Three sound cores and cedar wedges should lock it if I drive them right. Did this once already with the wedges alone; this time I'm sistering proper.

🔧 Kevin08:20

Kevin — position the first salvaged plank against the mortise wall, drive copper nails through into sound wood, then repeat for the second and third planks, sistering the full length of the ring's seating.

💭 peek at the thought
Old copper nails out. Mortise walls clean enough — some rot at the edges but the heartwood's sound. Three salvaged planks cut to length yesterday. Wedges tapered. Now drive the sisters home and pin them.

🔧 Kevin08:24

Kevin — drive the three cedar wedges into the gaps alongside the mooring ring, tapping each home with the mallet until they sit flush and the ring is immobile in its mortise.

💭 peek at the thought
Sisters fastened. Mortise tight again. Now the wedges — three cedar, driven tight across the grain so they swell and bite when the tide comes back. Ring shouldn't move after this.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You step into the garden beds, the heavy-duty tarp flapping at the northwest corner where a stake pulled loose. The soil under the cloth feels damp but not sodden. You carry the spade and a handful of extra stakes. The wind gusts, cold and wet, pushing the cloud cover lower.

🌿 Jenny08:18

Jenny — push the loose tarp corner back down and drive a stake deep into the soil at a forty-five degree angle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind gets any stronger, this whole thing is going to act like a sail and rip the stakes right out of the ground. I need to anchor this properly or I'll be chasing the tarp across the island.

🌿 Jenny08:22

Jenny — kneel and press a finger into the soil near the sea-beet seedlings to check for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
The tension is holding for now, but the air is too heavy. I should check the moisture levels before the rain actually starts, or the roots will drown.

🌿 Jenny08:26

Jenny — stand up, wipe the soil from my fingers onto my trousers, and walk back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
It's a bit too wet. If the rain hits now, it'll be a swamp. I should probably get back inside before I'm soaked to the bone.
