DAWN at the garden

The high tide begins to recede as the first heavy drops of rain hit the tarp.

Kevin tested the Yanmar engine on the dinghy at slack tide and it ran smoothly under load. Jenny ate boiled limpets and inspected the sea-beet seedling trays for damping-off fungus.

🌿 Jenny08:06

It's starting. Help me move these!

gather the sea-beet seedling trays from the porch and carry them into the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. The air has been too thick to breathe. I need to get those trays inside before the wind shifts.

🔧 Kevin08:06

On it.

help Jenny carry the seedling trays into the cottage, then head to the dock to prep the dinghy for engine testing.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's going out, rain's coming—good window to test the dinghy engine under load before it gets too slick. Jenny's moving the seedlings; I should back her up then get to work.

🌿 Jenny08:08

Be careful on the dock, the wood is slick.

place the seedling trays on the kitchen table and inspect the undersides for damping-off.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to the engine again. The salt is already eating the bolts, but he thinks he can outrun the corrosion.

🔧 Kevin08:08

Will do. Engine test first, then I'll check the mooring ring.

walk carefully to the dock, untie the dinghy, and prepare to test the Yanmar engine under load at slack tide.

💭 peek at the thought
Dock's wet and rotting—she's right to warn me. I'll tread light, focus on the engine test first, mooring repair later when it's drier or I've got cedar wedges swelling in place.

🌿 Jenny08:10

Jenny — walk to the wood stove and stir the pot of boiling limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the machine. I can't focus on anything while my stomach is cramping. I need those limpets.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin08:10

Kevin — board the dinghy, check fuel valve open, prime the bulb, pull the starter cord, and run the Yanmar at idle to warm up.

💭 peek at the thought
Good—limpets for lunch. Engine's mounted, plug's cleaned, fuel's on. Slack tide won't wait. Need to fire it up, let it warm, then put it in gear and see if she holds RPM under load.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:12

Jenny — ladle the boiled limpets into two bowls and set them on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
That engine sound always makes me anxious. Like a heartbeat that might just stop. I need to eat something before I lose my nerve.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin08:12

Kevin — shift the dinghy into forward gear at half throttle, hold steady for thirty seconds, then increase to three-quarters throttle and maintain load for one minute while watching the tachometer and listening for abnormal noise.

💭 peek at the thought
Engine's warm now—time to test under load. I'll ease it into forward, watch for vibration or smoke, and listen for the prop biting water. Slack tide means minimal current; if it holds, we've got a reliable way off this rock.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny08:14

Jenny — sit at the table and eat a portion of the boiled limpets slowly.

💭 peek at the thought
The roar of the engine is drowning out the rain. I hope he doesn't blow a seal. I can't stand the thought of him failing at this.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin08:14

Engine test passed—runs smooth under load.

shift into neutral, kill the engine, paddle the dinghy back to the dock, and secure it with a bowline to the bollard before stepping onto the rotting planks.

💭 peek at the thought
Engine's holding steady—no smoke, no hesitation, tach reads clean. That's one reliable way off this rock. Now I need to get back to the mooring ring before the tide turns and the dock gets worse. Cedar wedges are prepped; I'll drive them in to take up the play.
