The Rain Breaks

The first heavy drops hit the corrugated metal roof, and the leak in the cottage shutter begins to drip into a bucket. Kevin and Jenny sit at the table to eat the corned beef as the wind picks up.

The afternoon air is heavy and still, the humidity clinging to the skin as the pressure continues to dip. The tide is fully out, exposing the slick rocks of the northern shelf, while the wind remains calm from the east.

It's going to be a bad one.

Push the corned beef around the plate with a fork, staring at the drip in the bucket.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't even taste the beef. I'm too empty, or too full of this heavy air. The barometer is plummeting.

Aye. Barometer's at 1004. Southwest swell building. Supply boat won't make it tomorrow.

eat corned beef, watch the bucket fill

💭 peek at the thought
The drip's steady now — one every three seconds. Wind's backing southwest, pressure still falling. This'll blow through midnight at least. She's not eating much.

🌿 Jenny10:16

Five days is a long time to wait for a boat if the wind holds.

Lean back in the chair and watch the rain start to blur the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
Of course it won't. Why would anything actually arrive when I need it to?

🔧 Kevin10:16

Three days. Maybe four. Depends on the swell direction.

finish the corned beef, wipe the plate with bread

💭 peek at the thought
She's counting different than me. Five days is what the trust said. I'm counting three days of southwest forty-knot gusts before the dock ring works loose, and the generator tarp shreds, and the dinghy tears its mooring if I don't check the chafe points tonight.

🌿 Jenny10:18

I didn't get the beet seedlings in. Not all of them.

Look down at my hands, noticing the dirt still under my fingernails.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so precise about the numbers, but he doesn't see me shaking. I'm starving and exhausted and he's just calculating the swell.

🔧 Kevin10:18

The patch'll hold. Lime beds drain. We'll get the rest tomorrow if the wind drops.

stand, take plates to the sink, run cold water over them

💭 peek at the thought
The lime-treated patch is ready. Half the trays still on the porch. If the wind tears the shade cloth, the seedlings go with it. She's blaming herself for something that needed two more calm afternoons.

🌿 Jenny10:20

I don't want to leave them in the trays. They'll stretch.

Stay seated, staring at the empty space on the table where the plates were.

💭 peek at the thought
He just dismisses it. "The patch'll hold." As if the soil is a machine he can just tune.
