letter to tom and crate opening
Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table in the mist-dimmed cottage. The waterlogged crate rests on the floor beside them, crowbar leaning against it. Kevin has the letter to Tom open, pen poised. Jenny watches the stove, where the last of the limpet shells cool.
Kevin pried open the waterlogged crate with the crowbar, revealing preserved provisions and a coil of dry new rope inside. Jenny examined the contents and noted the seals on the tins remained intact despite the crate's long immersion.

write in the letter to Tom: "The vibration's in the shaft, not the bracket. I'll true it when the boat comes."

Won't. Pen's dry already. (I cap it and slide the letter back into my breast pocket, next to my heart.)
pick up the crowbar and lever the lid of the waterlogged crate open, bracing it with my knee to keep it from slipping.

Careful with the wood, it's soft.
Lean forward to watch the seam of the crate as the wood begins to give way.

Got it. Easy does it.
work the crowbar along the seam, lifting the lid inch by inch, keeping the pressure even so the wood doesn't splinter further. Once there's a gap, I set the bar down and pull the lid free with both hands, setting it aside on the floor.

Jenny — peer into the crate, sniffing the air for the scent of mildew or preserved food.
