Morning Rain and Tank Prep

Kevin and Jenny stand under the porch overhang as steady rain drums against the garden tarp. Jenny checks the water level in the overflowing tank while Kevin inspects the barometer's falling needle.

Kevin secured the loose garden tarp corner with new rope, then went to the dock and drove three cedar wedges into the mooring ring mortise until the ring felt solid. Jenny sketched the sea beet seedlings' salt-gland morphology and noted two additional lettuce cells showing damping-off fungus.

🌿 Jenny12:26

The tank is full. We don't need to worry about water.

Wipes condensation from her palm and stares at the grey horizon of the northern shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If the boat doesn't come in two days, the salt spray will kill everything.

🔧 Kevin12:26

Aye. Best we batten down before the wind picks up. I'll check the tarp and the mooring ring—see if it's shifted again.

walk to the garden, inspect the loose tarp corner and secure it with the new rope if needed, then head to the dock to check the mooring ring for play in the mortise.

💭 peek at the thought
The tank's full, but the barometer's falling fast—storm's coming. I should check the tarp corners again, but my hands are shaking from hunger. That letter to Tom's still warm in my pocket.

🌿 Jenny12:28

Be careful with the wood, it's soft from the rot.

Picks up her pencil and begins sketching the way the sea beet leaves curl under the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
If that ring pulls out again, the wayhy is lost and I'm stuck on this rock forever.

🔧 Kevin12:30

I'll tread light. The ring's held this long—just needs wedges driven deeper.

walk to the dock, test the planks underfoot before committing weight, then inspect the mooring ring mortise and drive the remaining cedar wedges tighter with the mallet.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—the dock planks are punky. I'll test each step. And she's sketching again, which means she's calm. Good.

🌿 Jenny12:31

Don't force it, or you'll split the grain.

Watches him from the garden, her pencil hovering over the sketch of a sea beet seedling.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too optimistic about the wood. The salt is eating the whole island.

🔧 Kevin12:32

Aye, easy does it. I'll tap them in till they bite, no more.

insert the cedar wedges into the mooring ring mortise one by one, tapping gently with the mallet, checking for movement after each, until the ring feels solid or the wood begins to resist.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me. I don't want to break the wood, but the ring's loose and the boat's due soon. I'll work slow, feel the grain.
