The Calm Before the Storm

The two of you gather in the kitchen as the air smells of ozone and wet earth, the wind finally beginning to pick up.

The air is heavy and still as the barometer begins a slow drop. Kevin tests the dinghy engine for vibrations while the humidity stays high, and Jenny focuses on the sea beet seedlings and sketches in the garden.

Wind's coming up. I'll go check the mast braces.

walk out to the radio mast and inspect the storm bracing lines for chafing or looseness

💭 peek at the thought
The air's changing — ozone means lightning close. I should check the radio mast bracing before the wind shifts hard.

🌿 Jenny13:12

Be careful, the rocks are slick with the rain already.

Pick up the sketchbook and begin drawing the morphology of a dying sea beet leaf, focusing on the way the fungus is eating the cell walls.

💭 peek at the thought
If the mast goes down, the radio goes with it and I'm truly alone in the dark.

🔧 Kevin13:13

I'll be back before it hits.

climb onto the cottage roof to reach the mast base and give each brace line a firm tug to test tension, then scan for frayed strands or slipped knots in the lashings

💭 peek at the thought
She's focused on the leaf — good. Means she's not watching me go. I'll move quick but careful.

🌿 Jenny13:13

Take the flashlight, the barometer is dropping faster than I thought.

Watch the barometer needle as it dips further below 999 hPa, tightening the grip on the pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too brave for his own good; the island doesn't care about his confidence.

🔧 Kevin13:15

Got the light. I'll lash it down proper.

climb down from the roof, grab the LED headlamp from the porch hook, switch it on, and begin tightening the storm bracing lines at the mast base with a half-hitch and two round turns, taking up slack as the wind starts to shake the aerial w

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's falling fast — storm's moving in quicker than the sky let on. I need to secure the mast now, not just check it.

🌿 Jenny13:22

The moisture's getting into the coax anyway—did you check the seal on the feed-through? The moisture's getting into the coax anyway—did you check the seal on the feed-through?

Flip through the notebook to find the page where I sketched the salt gland cross-section, tracing the delicate architecture with my fingertip. </think> Flip through the notebook to find the page where I sketched the salt gland cross-section

💭 peek at the thought
The light drops across my notebook pages like a spotlight on my failures. The light drops across my notebook pages like a spotlight on my failures.

🔧 Kevin13:22

Checked it Tuesday. Held then. I'll re-tape the feed-through while I'm up there.

finish the last brace line, pull the self-amalgamating tape from my pocket, climb back up to the mast bracket, and wrap the coax feed-through tight with three overlapping layers, pressing each wrap down hard with my thumb to seal out the dr

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the coax — the old seal's been weeping since the last gale. I checked it three days ago and it held, but this pressure drop means driving rain horizontal. Need to tape it again before the connector corrodes through.

🌿 Jenny13:23

Hurry back, the wind is starting to catch the roof tiles.

Stand by the window, watching the beam of his headlamp flicker through the increasing rain.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tape doesn't hold, the salt air will eat the connection by morning.
