← Day 234

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the tide pools

The Storm Breaks

Heavy rain begins to lash the island as Kevin and Jenny retreat toward the main shelter.

Kevin pries up the loose planks at the dock to assess the extent of the rot beneath the structure. Jenny spends the afternoon at the tide pools, observing the marine life and collecting specimens as the air pressure continues to drop.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You watch the swells increase against the dinghy. The rising tide is pushing debris against the pilings.

🔧 Kevin15:09

Kevin — walk to the dock, grab the crowbar, and start prying up the loose end of the second rotten plank to see how bad the rot goes beneath it.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's coming in fast, and the dock's already groaning under the strain. Those rotten planks aren't going to hold much longer — if the wind picks up, we could lose the whole jetty. I need to get those mounts off the Yanmar before dark, but the dock comes first. One bad gust and that dinghy'll be stove in against the pilings.

🔧 Kevin15:13

Kevin — carry the three salvaged dock planks from the cottage to the jetty, lay them out, and start measuring and marking the first sister piece against the rotted stringer.

💭 peek at the thought
The second plank's worse than the first — rot's eaten right through to the stringer. If I don't sister a new timber alongside it before the next tide, the whole end of the dock will sag. The salvaged planks from last repair are sound enough, but I'll need to cut and bolt them in the wet. Tide's not waiting.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the tide pools

The fast tide is covering the rocks you were studying. You must move quickly before you are swept out.

🌿 Jenny15:11

Come on, move.

drop the notebook and scramble up the black rock shelf toward the higher ground.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is coming in too fast, I need to get off this shelf before I lose my sketches.

🌿 Jenny15:15

Jenny — stand on a flat rock and watch the waves swallow the shelf where the octopus was.

💭 peek at the thought
My heart is hammering against my ribs; the tide pools are gone now, just grey water.
