The storm breaks

The wind howls through the eaves and the rain drums steadily on the roof. Kevin and Jenny huddle inside as the lantern flickers.

The air remains heavy and still as the barometer continues to drop, signaling an approaching storm. Jenny successfully secures the garden tarp and checks the heirloom seed tin, while Kevin inspects the dinghy engine mounts for signs of stress stress.

Generator's holding. Radio's dead till the insulator's replaced proper. You want the last of the coffee?

walk to the wood stove and pour two mugs from the pot simmering on top

💭 peek at the thought
The storm's here proper now. Barometer was 994 and falling when I last checked. Generator's running but the vibration in the dinghy engine's been eating at me — mount rubber's shot, I know it. Should've pulled it yesterday. Now we wait.

Coffee's fine, but we need to secure everything above the high tide line before dawn - the barometer's dropping fast.

move to window and check if the garden tarp is still properly staked down, then quickly survey the shoreline through the rain-streaked glass to gauge how high the tide is already climbing.

💭 peek at the thought
The generator's holding but I can hear the metal screaming underneath the vibration. That sleeve won't fix what's wrong - something deeper in the alignment is grinding itself apart. And the radio's dead, which means no weather updates when this storm breaks. My grandmother's seeds are sweating in their packets as I type this, and I haven't even planted the damn sea thrift yet.

Tarp corner. Dock ring. Dinghy lines. In that order.

pull on oilskin and boots, grab the headlamp from the hook by the door

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Tide's pushing hard against a falling barometer — surge on top of spring high. The garden tarp's one corner was loose yesterday, I tied it off with new rope but didn't stake it deep. Dock mooring ring's loose in its mortise too. If the dinghy breaks free it takes the mast bracket with it.

🌿 Jenny15:49

I'll check the seeds first. If the wind picks up any more, the garden wall won't matter anyway.

grab the tin of seeds and wrap it in a dry cloth, then follow him out onto the porch to feel the strength of the gust.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so clinical with the lists, like a sequence can hold the ocean at bay. If the tarp goes, the whole sea beet patch is drowned in salt water before I even get the pH right. I'm too tired to argue, but the humidity is already ruining the tin.
