A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin completed the dinghy engine mount replacement and tested the Yanmar at full throttle with no vibration. Jenny boiled and ate limpets while finishing her sea beet salt gland illustrations.

🔧 Kevin16:38

Jenny, I’m going to work on the dinghy mounts. Won’t be long.

walk to the dinghy, inspect the cracked neoprene mounts on the transom, remove the old rubber with a knife, clean the bolt holes with a wire brush, fit the new neoprene mounts, torque the bolts to 35Nm, then step back and check alignment.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain’s eased, but the air still hangs heavy. I need to fix those engine mounts before dark—can’t risk another vibration shaking loose at sea. And I owe Tom that line. Just one. Start there.

🌿 Jenny16:39

Don't get oil on the deck. The barometer is still dropping, we're going to need that boat.

Sits at the kitchen table, opens a tin of tackle, and begins sketching a detailed diagram of a sea beet salt gland in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a new mount fixes the vibration, but the whole hull is under stress. I'm so hungry my stomach hurts.

🔧 Kevin16:41

Won't. Got a rag in my pocket.

wipe the mount bolts and transom faces clean with a rag from my pocket, torque the four bolts to 35Nm in a cross pattern, double-check alignment with a straightedge across the engine feet, step back and eye the shaft runout.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the barometer. And the deck. Wipe the bolts clean before I torque them. She's watching the pressure like it's a personal grudge.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:42

Make sure the bolts are seated. I'm going to boil the limpets before the rain starts.

Sharpens a pencil and begins shading the intricate cellular structure of the sea beet leaf in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If that vibration doesn't stop, it's the shaft, and I can't afford a broken prop right now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:43

Seated. Running true. I'll test it after the limpets.

walk back to the cottage porch, wipe hands on the rag, hang it on the nail by the door, pull out the journal from the shelf, flip to the page with Tom's letter, uncap the pen.

💭 peek at the thought
Bolts seated. Shaft true. Engine sits level. Good. Now the real test — fire it up and see if the vibration's gone. But she's moving on limpets, and the barometer's still dropping. Storm's coming. We'll need the dinghy ready.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:43

Don't stay too long in the water. The tide is pulling fast.

Starts a sketch of the sea beet's salt glands, focusing on the way the crystals form on the

💭 peek at the thought
The air is getting heavy; that pressure drop means a storm before I've even finished the north ridge.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:47

I'm not going in the water. Just writing.

write in the journal: 'I'm sorry we let it go this far.' under the date, fold the page once to seal the words, slide it into the waterproof radio box on the shelf, close the lid.

💭 peek at the thought
She's worried about the tide — and me. But I'm not going in the water. I'm writing. One line. That's all I promised myself. The sea can wait.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:48

Check the wood way again. I'm going to start on the limpets.

Stands up slowly, knees popping, and walks to the kitchen to fill a pot of water.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is at 993 and still falling. If it breaks, the north ridge seedlings are washed out.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:49

I'll check the wood way. Then fire her up.

walk to the dinghy, crouch and sight along the engine mounts and transom wood for any gap or shift, run a finger along the bolt heads to confirm they're seated, stand and pull the choke, crank the starter — engine turns over clean, catches

💭 peek at the thought
The letter's in the box. Not sent. Not yet. But it's there. Like a stone in my pocket — small, but I feel it. Now the engine. If it runs clean, we've got a way out when the supply boat doesn't come.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:49

way. Don't let the water cold, I need to get the limpets started.

Sets the pot on the wood stove and begins scraping the grit from the shells with a small knife.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound is right now, but the hunger in my stomach is louder.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:51

Engine's running clean. No vibration at idle. I'll give it throttle in a minute.

let the Yanmar warm at idle for thirty seconds, hand on the tiller, ear on the exhaust note, then ease the throttle to half — watch the mounts, feel the transom, listen for shake

💭 peek at the thought
She said "wood way" — means the wood stove. Or the path to the wood pile. But the engine's running. Smooth. No shake at idle. Let it warm. Then give it throttle. See if the mounts hold.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:52

Keep it steady. If that holds, I can actually eat these limpets.

Drops the first limpet into the boiling water and watches the steam rise.

💭 peek at the thought
It's holding for now, but the sky is turning the color of a bruise.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:53

Holding at half. Taking it up.

advance throttle to three-quarter, eyes on the engine feet, hand braced on the gunwale feeling for vibration through the hull, count ten seconds, then push to full throttle — hold it, watch, listen

💭 peek at the thought
Half throttle. No shake. The mounts hold. The transom's dead still. Exhaust note clean. Push it further — three-quarter. Then full. If it holds there, we're good.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:53

That's enough! Back it off before you blow a seal.

Grabs the tongs from the pot and lifts the first limpet out of the water.

💭 peek at the thought
The engine is screaming, but the boat is quiet. It's holding.
