A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin worked in the steady rain to inspect the dinghy engine mounts, checking for the source of vibration. Jenny stayed inside the cottage, sketching sea beet morphology in her notebook while watching the barometer drop.

Kettle's hot if you want another cup.

walk to the stove and lift the kettle lid, checking the water level

💭 peek at the thought
The cottage feels smaller when the rain holds steady like this. Kitchen smells of boiled limpet and woodsmoke. Jenny's on the porch with the radio — or what's left of it. I should check the dinghy mounts properly this afternoon, but the tide's rising and the transom's still weeping at the scarf joint. Might be better to let the epoxy cure another day and tackle the mooring ring at the dock instead. Supply boat's due in nine days. That ring shifts under load.

🌿 Jenny16:15

Yeah. Thanks.

take the mug from him and watch the rain lashes against the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying, but I'm just thinking about the dampness killing the seedlings.

🔧 Kevin16:17

I’ll be out back if you need me. Gonna check those mounts.

pull on the oilskins, grab the tool roll from the shelf, and step out into the rain toward the dinghy on the beach

💭 peek at the thought
She’s quiet again, but she took the mug. That’s something. Rain’s drumming on the roof like it’s trying to wear a hole through. I watched the scarf joint on the transom this morning — no fresh weep, just old damp. Epoxy’s holding. Mooring ring can wait till the tide drops. Might as well start on those engine mounts while the dinghy’s still hauled out. Neoprene’s in the locker, and I’ve got the file to clean the bolt holes.

🌿 Jenny16:18

(small voice) Be careful with the tide coming in. (to myself) I'll check the mounts later when the rain stops.

set the mug down carefully and walk toward the window to watch him disappear through the garden gate. MEMORIES THAT COME TO MIND: - The crystalline architecture of the sea beet salt glands under the magnifying glass. turn back toward the co

💭 peek at the thought
The mounts again. He's convinced the alignment's the problem, not the bracket. I should have stayed up there with the salt glands yesterday.

🔧 Kevin16:19

Won't be long. Just cracking the bolts.

reach the dinghy, drop to one knee in the wet shingle, and spray penetrating oil on the four engine mount bolts while the rain hammers down

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's pushing hard up the beach. Dinghy's bow is already kissing the water. I'll need to work fast if I'm getting those mounts off before the hull floats. Neoprene's in the locker under the tarps. Bolts are 12mm — got the ring spanner. Salt's welded them in good, but heat and patience usually win.

🌿 Jenny16:19

Jenny — pick up my notebook and flip to the page with the sea beet sketches, tracing the curve of a leaf to keep my hands from shaking.

💭 peek at the thought
If those bolts are seized, he'll just strip the heads. He's too impatient with the salt.

🔧 Kevin16:21

(nothing — focused on the bolt)

pull the small propane torch from the tool roll, flick it on, and play the flame over the bolt head for ten seconds, then try the ring spanner again with steady pressure

💭 peek at the thought
She’s holding my notebook. Tracing the sea beet leaf like it’s something familiar. I haven’t shown her those sketches in weeks. The salt glands — they’re perfect little kidneys, pulling the brine out so the plant can stand. Kind of like what we’re trying to do here, isn’t it? Just filtering the salt so we don’t shrivel. Bolt’s not moving. Need more oil, and maybe a tap from the hammer — but I don’t want to split the transom. I’ll heat the bolt head with the torch. Quick burst. Enough to break the corrosion.

🌿 Jenny16:23

Jenny — lean my forehead against the cool glass of the window, watching the orange flicker of the torch against the grey rain.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat should expand the metal, but the salt eats too deep here. If it snaps, we're stuck on this side without the boat.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:25

(grunting as I turn the bolt) Almost got this one.

apply steady pressure to the ring spanner, feeling the bolt break free, then spin it out the rest of the way by hand and set it aside on the gunwale

💭 peek at the thought
The torch hissed, the bolt warmed — I felt it give just a fraction. One more turn and it’s loose. Rain’s running down my neck, cold under the oilskin. Three to go. If I can get these off before the tide lifts the dinghy, I can swap the mounts and be back before dark. Jenny’s still at the window. Not moving. Just watching the flame. I wonder what she sees when she looks at me out there — the man who fixes things, or the one who keeps letting the line go slack.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:26

Jenny — watch his hand move in the rain, wondering if he sees the way the water is pooling around the hull.

flagged: repeated_opener

💭 peek at the thought
One more to go. If the threads are stripped, the whole mount is junk.
