The Storm Breaks
Kevin and Jenny retreat inside the cottage as the wind increases to a howl. The rain drums incessantly on the tin roof.
The western squall hit with a sudden violence of wind followed by a heavy wall of rain that turned the garden into a soup. Kevin and Jenny worked against the elements to secure the cottage and the garden, but the heavy silt in the north channel proved too stubborn for the spade to overcome.
Tarp's gone. Let the wind have it.
Step inside the cottage, pull the door shut against the gale, and set the greasy rag down on the kitchen table.

It was pegged deep, Kevin. The wind is just too greedy today.
Jenny wipes grit from her glasses with a sleeve and sighs, staring at the rain-streaked window.

Ground gave way, not the pegs. We'll see what's left at dawn.
Move to the wood stove, open the damper, and lay in a few splinters of kindling from the box beside the hearth.

The soil is turning to soup. It won't hold anything for long.
Jenny walks to the table and opens her notebook, tracing the sketch of a sea beet morphology with a trembling finger.

They'll come back. Sea beet's tough — it's made for this.
Add the kindling to the stove, strike a match, and cup my hands over the fledgling flame until it catches.

It's not just the plants, Kevin. The whole channel is choked.
Jenny pulls the tin of seeds from her pocket, feeling the cold metal without opening the lid.

We cleared the north end. Water's moving again. The rest can wait for the tide to drop.
Feed a split log into the stove, adjust the damper, and lean back against the counter, watching the fire take hold.

The tide doesn't wait for the garden to be ready.
Jenny sits at the table and begins to sketch the way the rain lashes against the stone wall.

Tide waits for nothing. We work with it or get swept.
Push off the counter, walk to the radio shelf, and turn the shortwave dial slowly across the bands, listening for any break in the storm's roar.

The channel is a mess, Kevin. The spade barely broke the silt.
Jenny picks up her pencil and begins to draw the jagged edge of a limpet shell she found this morning.

Silt's heavy. We hit gravel at the base. It'll drain.
Turn the radio dial back to the weather band, settle on the static hiss, and lean against the shelf with arms crossed.

It's not just the silt. The whole slope is taking the rain.
Jenny traces the outline of a salt gland in her notebook, her pencil pressing too hard against the paper.
