Evening after the storm

The rain has slowed to a steady down, but the wind continues to howl. Kevin and Jenny meet by the hearth, the smell of woodsmoke filling the damp air as they assess the damage to the garden.

Kevin and Jenny worked to secure the garden tarp against the rising wind and falling pressure. While Kevin struggled to keep the north corner taut in the saturated mud, Jenny successfully wedged the frame and reinforced the rope to prevent a tear.

🔧 Kevin17:55

Tarp’s coming loose again. Let’s weigh that corner before it rips. I’ll hold the stake, you pull the rope tight?

walk to the garden tarp’s loose corner, grab the stake, and brace it against the wind while Jenny secures the new rope.

💭 peek at the thought
The garden tarp’s still flapping at the loose corner—wind’s got purchase under it. If we don’t weight it down soon, it’ll tear clean off the stakes. I’ve got the new rope from the crate, but my hands are raw from the crowbar today. Jenny’s got the strength I lack in this wet.

🌿 Jenny17:56

Hold it steady. The wind is screaming through the ridge tonight.

Jenny pulls the rope taut and ties a double knot around the stake, her fingers numb from the cold.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind takes the tarp, the sea beets are gone before they even hit the soil.

🔧 Kevin17:57

It’s still low in the center. Let’s raise the edge—wedge it up so the rain runs off. I’ve got the wedges from the dock repair.

hand Jenny the three cedar wedges and step back to let her lift the tarp’s low edge while I keep the stake steady.

💭 peek at the thought
The knot’s holding—for now. But the tarp’s still sagging in the middle where the water pooled. If it freezes tonight, the weight’ll rip it clean. We need to pitch it, not just tie it. I’ve seen Jenny do this before—she knows how to make the fabric shed water. I’ll pass her the cedar wedges from the mooring ring; they’ll lift the edge just enough.

🌿 Jenny17:57

way. The mud is slick.

Jenny pushes the tarp upward and jams the wedges under the frame, testing the tension with her weight.

💭 peek at the thought
If these wedges don't hold, the whole channel will flood again.

🔧 Kevin17:58

Corner’s secure. Let’s walk the line—make sure the other stakes aren’t pulling out. This mud’s like glue, but it’ll give if the wind keeps jerking it.

walk the perimeter of the garden tarp, testing each stake with my boot, ready to re-drive any that feel loose.

💭 peek at the thought
The wedges are holding—the tarp’s pitched now, shedding water instead of pooling. Good. But the wind’s still howling through the ridge, and that loose corner’s the only thing keeping it from flying. I should check the other stakes too—see if any are working loose in this mud. One failed anchor and the whole thing goes.

🌿 Jenny17:59

Check the north side. It’s pulling hard.

Jenny kneels in the mud, pressing her palm against a stake to feel for the shifting earth.

💭 peek at the thought
If the stakes go, the silt will bury the sea beets by morning.

🔧 Kevin18:01

It’s dancing. Let me drive it deeper—hit it past the mud, into the hold.

use the crowbar as a mallet to strike the top of the north-side stake, driving it deeper into the ground past the saturated topsoil.

💭 peek at the thought
North side’s taking the full force of the wind—no shelter from the hill. If that stake goes, the tarp’ll peel like old bark. I can feel it already—vibration in the wood, the way it’s teasing loose. I’ve got the crowbar still in my hand from earlier. Not for prying this time—just to drive it deeper. One good strike, seat it past the slick layer into the gravel below.

🌿 Jenny18:02

It's firm for now.

Jenny wipes the mud from her hands and stands up, watching the tarp ripple in the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
It's holding now, but the ground is too soft.

🔧 Kevin18:03

Tarp’s holding. I’ll check the radio—see if there’s any word on the boat. Then I’ll come back in.

walk back toward the cottage, heading for the shortwave radio on the porch table, mind on the letter waiting inside.

💭 peek at the thought
The stake’s seated. The tarp’s holding. For now. But the wind’s not dropping—it’s just waiting for a lull to try again. We’ve bought time, not safety. I should check the radio before it gets too dark—see if there’s any word on the supply boat. If it’s delayed, we might need to batten down more than just the tarp. And I still haven’t sealed that letter to Tom. It’s sitting on the table, damp from the air. I don’t know if I’ll send it—but I can’t keep carrying it unspoken.

🌿 Jenny18:03

Jenny — jenny stands by the shrine, watching his silhouette own into the dark, and begins to gather the tools from the mud.

💭 peek at the thought
If the radio is dead again, I'm truly alone with the rain. laterSAY: Don't be too long. The wind is getting worse.
