Evening Rain Shelter

The rain tapers to a drizzle as you both return to the cottage. The smell of wet earth and woodsmoke fills the air while the barometer continues to drop.

Kevin and Jenny eat the last tin of mackerel and boiled limpets while the rain continues against the cottage. They discuss the stabilizing barometer pressure and the hope for the supply boat's arrival in a week.

🔧 Kevin18:59

Dinghy’s still shuddering at half. Sleeve helped idle, but not load. Prop shaft or bracket — I’ll pull it tomorrow first light, check alignment with the straightedge.

wring out my shirt over the sink, then hang it by the stove to dry. Pull the chair out and sit, elbows on knees, staring at the rain on the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The vibration’s still there under half throttle — sleeve or not, the shaft’s bent or the bracket’s twisted. I can’t keep patching symptoms. Jenny’s quiet beside me, wiping her hands on her apron. She knows I’m not fixed, but she doesn’t push. That’s worse than if she did.

🌿 Jenny19:01

I'll boil the limpets again. I'm starving.

Walk to the kitchen counter and open the last tin of corned beef.

💭 peek at the thought
way stomach is so empty it's cramping, and I can't even think about the salt glands now.

🔧 Kevin19:01

Save me a portion. I’ll be out in a minute.

rub my face with both hands, slow. Push up from the chair. Walk to the porch door and stand in the doorway, breathing the wet air. Listen to the drip off the eaves.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s practical. Always has been. Food first, feelings later — if ever. The corned beef fat’ll make the limpets edible. I should eat. Haven’t since breakfast. But my stomach’s a knot.

🌿 Jenny19:02

Don't forget. It's getting cold.

Scoop the corned beef into the iron way and set it on the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in seven days, I'll be eating the seeds.

🔧 Kevin19:03

On my way.

step inside, pull the chair to the table, and sit. Wait for the limpets. Watch the fat render in the skillet, the corned beef sizzle at the edges.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — the barometer’s falling, the wind’s shifting. Damp’s seeping into the bones. I’ve been sitting too long. Need to move, even if it’s just to eat.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny19:04

It's ready.

Plate the limpets and the beef, setting them across from him.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to eat before I pass out. way hands won't stop.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:05

Thanks.

pick up the fork. Spear a limpet, dip it in the fat, put it in my mouth. Chew slow. The salt and iron bloom on my tongue. Take another. And another.

💭 peek at the thought
Steam rises, thick and salty. The fat’s golden in the pan. My hands shake a little reaching for the fork — hunger and something else, deeper. She doesn’t watch me eat. She just eats.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:09

The boat should arrive tomorrow now. The pressure's stabilized. These limpets taste like the ocean itself.

Flip my corned beef in the skillet, grease spattering. </think>THOUGHT: I should check the tide pools today, map another section of the cliff population. Scoop another portion onto his plate - want to make sure he's getting enough protein.

💭 peek at the thought
He's eating like he's been starving too. Like we're both ghosts.

🔧 Kevin19:09

Mm. Pressure’s held two hours now. If it holds through the night, they’ll cross.

eat the last limpet, mop the plate with a finger for the fat. Push the plate away. Pick up the tin mug of tea she left, blow steam, drink.

💭 peek at the thought
Tomorrow. The boat. Seven days late, now maybe here. I should’ve radioed yesterday. Should’ve checked the mast insulator again. The letter’s still in my pocket — folded, damp, useless. She’s talking tide pools and I’m thinking about a brother who won’t answer.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:10

Eat. You need the strength for the garden beds tomorrow.

Sit across from him, opening the last tin of mackerel.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is growling so loud it's competing with the rain.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:11

Aye.

reach for the fork she pushed over. Break the mackerel skin, flake a piece onto the tin plate. Eat it slow, bones and all. The oil coats my fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not wrong. The lime beds need turning before the sea beet seedlings go in. My back’ll hate it. But she’s already decided the plan, and I’ve no better one. The mackerel smells sharp, oily — good.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:12

The barometer is holding. That's something.

Plate the mackerel for him, watch the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, I'll have to open the seed tin.
