Night of the Falling Tide
The rain tapers to a steady drizzle as the tide retreats from the shore. Inside the cottage is warm, the smell of woodsmoke and drying salt air lingering.
The heavy rain lashes against the cottage roof, a rhythmic drumming that masks the sound of the surf. The tide is out low, exposing the slick rocks of the northern shelf, but the weather makes any movement treacherous and dangerous.
Kevin — walk to the window and watch the tide line recede

The tide's far enough out to see the shelf now.
Sit at the kitchen table, open the notebook, and begin drawing the salt glands of the sea much I collected yesterday.

Back before lunch if the wind holds.
pull on oilskin jacket and boots, grab the notebook from the shelf, head out the porch door toward the tide pools

Watch out for the way rocks near the north.
Sharpen my pencil and focus on the cellular structure of the sea beet sketch.

Thanks.
move carefully along the shore, skirt the submerged rocks, pause at the first pool to rinse salt from the notebook cover before opening it to the sea beet transect page

(None)
Sketch a detailed cross-section of the sea beet leaf, noting where the salt crystals aggregate near the surface.
