The Morning Tide

The tide continues its fall, revealing more of the northern shelf. The air pressure drops as the barometer falls further.

Kevin and Jenny inspect the dock's mooring ring during the low tide. Kevin attempts to assess the rot in the mortise to prepare for a repair, while Jenny focuses on the garden patch for the sea beet seedlings.

🔧 Kevin19:36

Kevin — walk up to the cottage to check the barometer reading and grab the wrench for the dock mooring ring

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's dropping faster now. Tide's falling too — means the swell's got room to build. If the wind shifts west, the dock takes the hit. Need to check the mooring ring before the supply boat's due.

🌿 Jenny19:37

It's going to turn, Kevin. Take the heavy wrench, the small one won't hold it when the tide pulls.

Jenny kicks a loose pebble into the water, wipes her hands on her jeans, and looks down at the rotting planks of the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If I don't get that ring secured now, the next surge will rip the whole jetty apart before the boat arrives.

🔧 Kevin19:38

Right.

walk to the workshop, grab the heavy wrench, then head back down to the dock to inspect the mooring ring mortise

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The small wrench strips on the big nuts when there's load on them. The heavy one's in the workshop by the generator. Better grab it now while the tide's still falling — gives me room to work the mortise.

🌿 Jenny19:39

Watch the wayed wood. If the grain splits, the whole thing goes under.

way crouches at the edge of the jetty, tracing the rot in the timber with a thumb, checking how deep the decay actually goes.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too slow. The sky is turning the color of a bruise and I can feel the humidity in my joints.

🔧 Kevin19:40

Kevin — crouch beside her and probe the mortise with the nail puller to test the depth of the rot

💭 peek at the thought
She's seeing what I'm seeing — the rot's not just surface. It's tracked back along the grain toward the mortise. If the ring pulls free, it takes the timber with it. Need to check how much sound wood's left before I torque anything.

🌿 Jenny19:41

The center third's got to come out. You'll need to carve a new mortise in the sound stuff.

way reaches for the chisel from the workbench, her fingers already finding the familiar weight of it.

💭 peek at the thought
This wood is hollowed out halfway through. He's going to need to cut out the worst of it, but I don't have the tools to do it properly.

🔧 Kevin19:42

Sister plate first. Temporary. Then cut the mortise proper when the boat's come and gone.

head to the workshop to grab the steel plate, coach bolts, and the drill

💭 peek at the thought
Center third means cutting out the heart of the beam. New mortise in sound wood — that's a half-day job minimum, and the supply boat's due in six. If the swell builds before then, the ring's got nothing to hold to. Need to sister a temporary plate across the sound sections first, buy time for the proper repair.

🌿 Jenny19:43

Make sure the bolts are long. I don't want them just shearing through the rotted edge.

way picks up a pencil and starts marking the outline for the plate on the dry wood.

💭 peek at the thought
A plate won't hold long if a real storm hits, but it's better than it drifting out to sea.
