NIGHT
The pressure drops sharply as the barometer falls. The first heavy drops of rain begin to tap against the thatch of the roof.
The air is heavy and still, smelling of salt and coming rain as the tide retreats steadily, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the northern shelf. Inside the cottage, the pressure continues to drop on the barometer, while the scratching of a rat echoes behind the pantry shelves.
(Says nothing)
Closes the notebook and winces, limping toward the kitchen to check the wood stove.

I'll get the mooring ring sorted before the tide turns. You get the stove going.
walk down to the dock with the heavy wrench and cedar shims, check the mooring ring mortise at low tide, drive new wedges or epoxy the ring solid

Don't stay out too long. The tide is coming in fast.
Tosses a piece of dry driftwood into the stove and strikes a match, watching the flame catch.

Won't. Got enough light left.
inspect the mooring ring mortise, clear salt and debris, test the ring's movement under load, drive the three cedar shims deep with the heavy wrench handle, check for shift

Just watch the swell. The wind is already turning.
Groans as she shifts her weight, rubbing the throbbing skin around her ankle.

Almost got it. One more shim and it'll hold.
drive the third cedar shim into the mortise with the heavy wrench, test the ring by pulling sideways with the crowbar, check if it bites solid into the wood, step back and sight along the dock to see if it's true under tension
