A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin washed Jenny's swollen ankle with cold rainwater on the porch while she kept her eyes closed. The swelling has reduced noticeably but the skin remains hot and purple. Kevin prepared fresh tape but has not yet reapplied the brace.

Sit on the kitchen chair and peel the medical tape off my ankle, wincing as the skin pulls.

The tape's been on too long. Skin's macerated underneath. She's careful but it still hurts — good pain, the kind that means healing's happening, not the deep ache in the joint itself. Should've had her re-wrap it yesterday when the swelling dropped.

She's avoiding looking at me. The ankle's angry — purple tracking up past the malleolus, heat radiating off it. Could be the chafing from the driftwood splints, could be the joint itself. Either way she's right: quick matters. But clean matters more.

She's trusting me with this. Rare. The rain on the roof masks the sound of my breathing — steady, deliberate. Ankle's hot to touch three inches above the tape line. Lymphangitic streaking faint but there. Need to clean it proper before the new wrap. Salt water first, then the last of the antiseptic wipe from the medevac kit.
