Morning at the mooring ring
Kevin stands on the dock at high tide, water lapping the planks, a heavy wrench in hand and three salvaged sound cores stacked beside him. The mooring ring shifts in its mortise when he leans on it, the oak wedges he drove yesterday already split and useless. Jenny crouches at the water's edge with a bucket, rinsing a fresh handful of limpets, her ankle freshly re-taped with self-amalgamating tape, the barometer at her hip reading 994 hPa and falling.
Kevin completed the dock mooring ring repair by sistering salvaged sound cores to the stringers and bolting the ring through fresh wood with bronze bolts torqued to 25Nm. The repair held solid through a swell cycle. Jenny tested the ring's stability and gathered sea beet leaves for a meal.
Mortise is gone below the waterline. Wedges just bought us the night. Going to sister the sound cores to the stringers, bolt the ring through fresh wood. You check the tell-tales at high water — if the barometer holds above 980 through the cycle, the repair holds.
pry the rotten hull timber clear with the crowbar, expose the mortise depth, test the stringers for sound wood

Don't over-torque the bolts, Kevin. The salt has already compromised the grain of that timber.
Jenny wipes the salt from her hands on her apron and watches him work, the tide rising around her ankles.

Torque wrench set to 25. Not 35. Bronze bites softer than steel.
set the torque wrench to 25Nm, drill pilot holes through the salvaged cores into the stringers, drive the bronze bolts slow

Slow is better. The wood is soft as a way there.
Jenny picks up her notebook and begins to sketch the way the water darkens the new wood planks.

Sound cores are holding. Ring's solid in the new mortise. Two more bolts and she'll take the crane load.
drive the last two bronze bolts, check the ring for play, wipe salt off the wrench

Let it set for a minute. I want to see if it shifts under the next swell.
Jenny leans her weight against the new timber, testing the stability of the way ring.

It's not moving. Wedges swelled, bolts bit. She'll take the load.
step back, watch the ring through a swell cycle, tap the wedges with the mallet to seat them deeper

It looks solid. For now.
Jenny traces the grain of the new wood with her thumb, feeling the grit where the salt meets the epoxy.

For now is what we get. Barometer's still falling — secure the dinghy stern line double, then we move the crate inside before the front hits.
coil the heavy wrench, check the dinghy's forward spring and add a second stern spring with the new half-inch rope, gesture toward the cottage

Right. I'll grab the sea beet leaves.
Jenny picks up the bunch of sea beet leaves from the dock and heads toward the cottage, her ankle throbbing with every step.
