Evening meal and storm watch

Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table with bowls of sea beet and limpets. The wind has freshened from the southeast, rattling the porch door. The barometer holds at 992 but the sky is darkening fast. The supply boat is due in two days.

Kevin and Jenny eat a meal of sea beet and limpets while the air pressure continues to drop. Kevin assesses the dock for repairs while Jenny re-tapes her swollen ankle to prepare for the coming storm.

🌿 Jenny00:05

The pressure is dropping again. We need to check the tank levels before the storm hits.

Push a piece of sea much into my mouth, wincing as my ankle brushes the underside of the table.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat doesn't come, I'm going to run out of salt and hope. My ankle feels like it's on fire.

Tank's at three-ninety-one. Rain'll top it if the gutters hold. Eat your limpets.

take the sea beet from her fork, chew slowly, then reach under the table to adjust the driftwood splint on her ankle without looking

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tank — and she's feeding me again instead of eating herself. The ankle's swollen worse than she'll admit.

🌿 Jenny00:06

The gutters are clogged with leaves. I'll clear them tomorrow.

Pull my leg away slightly from his hand, focusing on the steam rising from the bowl.

💭 peek at the thought
He handles the pain like he's fixing the Yanmar engine. I'm so tired of being a repair project.

🔧 Kevin00:07

I'll do the gutters. You check the generator oil and the dinghy chafe gear.

set my bowl down, stand, and walk to the porch door to check the sky seaward

💭 peek at the thought
She won't let me touch it. Stubborn as a seized manifold bolt. Tomorrow she'll be on the roof in rising wind with a bad ankle and call it duty.

🌿 Jenny00:09

The oil is fine. I need to just eat.

Lean back slowly, rubbing the throbbing in my ankle while I watch him through the doorway.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks giving me a task will stop the shaking. I'm too weak to even lift the oil can.

🔧 Kevin00:09

Fair enough.

turn back from the door, pick up my bowl, and sit down again — close enough that our shoulders touch — and eat in silence

💭 peek at the thought
She's running on fumes and pride. The oil's not fine — she hasn't checked it in three days. But she'll bite if I push.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:10

It's going to blow hard.

Take a small bite of a limpet, the salt sharp on my tongue.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence is heavier than the wind. I feel like a seed that's forgotten to sprout.

🔧 Kevin00:10

Then the gutters wait. We lash what we can tonight.

finish my limpet, set the bowl down, and reach for the coil of new rope on the table — half-inch three-strand — to start securing the tarp over the generator

💭 peek at the thought
She's tasting the storm before it hits. I can feel it in my teeth.

🌿 Jenny00:13

Don't over-tension the lines. The wind will catch them.

Watch his hands working the rope, my fingers tracing the grain of the wooden table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always moving, always fixing things, while I'm just sitting here drying out.

🔧 Kevin00:13

I'll leave slack for the gusts.

measure a length by eye, cut it with the knife on my belt, and tie a rolling hitch to the tarp's corner grommet — neat, not tight — then walk it to the generator on the porch

💭 peek at the thought
She knows rope. Knows how a line sings before it snaps. Her fingers on the table — counting something. Heartbeats, maybe. Or days.
