The First Gust

The wind lashes against the cottage shutters. Rain finally begins to patter-thinly against the metal roof.

Kevin and Jenny check the dinghy lines as the sky darkens and the air pressure drops. The tide is receding, exposing the rocks around the dock, but the coming storm suggests they should prioritize securing the boat quickly.

Kevin — walk to the porch door and pull it open, stepping out onto the porch to check the dinghy lines at the dock in the failing light.

💭 peek at the thought
The front's here. Barometer's still dropping and the wind's backing southwest — that'll push swell straight into the dock face. Mooring ring repair held through the last cycle but the stringers are still soft aft of the sistered planks. Need to check the dinghy lines again before full dark.

Get back inside, Kevin! The sky is turning black and the barometer is already under nine hundred.

Wince as the ankle throbs, pulling the roll of self-amalgamating tape tight over the swelling.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; the boat won't make it in if this storm hits early.

Two minutes. Checking the chafe guards on the stern spring and the forward spring. If the cleat tears out, I want to know now.

Walk down the porch steps and across the wet grass to the dock, headlamp beam cutting through the rain, inspect the doubled stern spring and forward spring where they lead to the aft cleat and the mooring ring, run fingers along the chafe p

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the barometer. Nine hundred even would mean something violent coming. But the dinghy's our only way off this rock if the cottage goes, and a parted line in the night means losing her. Two minutes to verify the chafe gear and the forward spring.

Don't stay out there! The surge is coming faster than the forecast!

Stand up painfully, gripping the edge of the table for balance as I move toward the window to watch him.

💭 peek at the thought
If that cleat gives, the dinghy is lost to the surge and I'm stranded here with no radio.
