Pre-Storm Securing

Rain begins to lash the corrugated roof as the wind picks up from the west. Jenny moves the heirloom seed tin inside the plastic tarp while Kevin checks the tension on the generator's storm lashings.

The rain has turned into a heavy driving force from the west, obscuring the horizon. The tide is rising quickly, pushing water toward the lower dock planks. The barometer continues to drop to 990 hPa, signaling a significant storm front.

🌿 Jenny00:25

Kevin, watch the generator. The wind is turning sharp.

pull the tarp tighter over the seed tin and weight the corners with the heavy stones.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if this storm hits now, the dock will be the first thing to go.

🔧 Kevin00:26

Generator's lashed. Vibration's still there above half throttle. I'll nurse it at idle if we need charge.

check the generator's ratchet straps one more time, then walk back toward the cottage porch to secure the dinghy's forward spring line before the tide lifts it against the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing west-southwest now. Generator lashings are tight but the vibration at half-throttle still worries me — prop shaft alignment or that skewed mast bracket. She's right to move the tin; damp kills heirloom stock faster than cold.

Don't over-tighten the line. The dinghy needs room to breathe.

open the notebook and sketch the way the light is bruising over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fixing the machines while the island eats the wood.

🔧 Kevin00:28

Aye. Slack for the surge.

ease the forward spring line to give the dinghy two feet of play, make fast with a round turn and two half-hitches on the cleat, then step onto the porch and set the kettle on the stove

💭 peek at the thought
She knows boats. Taught me that lesson in the Solent — snapped a cleat clean off a charter yacht because I cranked the spring line drum-tight in a rising swell. Dinghy's light, the dock's rotten in spots. Let it ride.

🌿 Jenny00:28

The water won't stay low once the wind bottoms out.

watch the rotten planks of the jetty sway in the grey light.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is already rising; the wood of that dock is screaming under the strain.

🔧 Kevin00:30

Replaced two last week. Three more sound cores salvaged. Bolts held through the last blow.

glance at the dock planks through the rain, then pull the porch door shut against the wind and pour water into the kettle

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the barometer better than I am. 990 and steady means the low's still deepening. Tide's rising on top of surge — dock planks will be underwater by midnight. The two rotten ones I haven't replaced yet will shift if the bolts don't hold.
