Night before the storm

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the first heavy gusts of wind pick up through the trees, the smell of rain thickening in the air.

Kevin attempts to pull the Yanmar prop shaft by hand to check for scoring but finds it too stubborn to move. Jenny meticulously checks the water tank for leaks and ensures it remains secure as the storm moves in.

🌿 Jenny01:17

The pressure is falling. We need to get the last of everything before the rain really starts.

Jenny grabs the seed tin from the stove and moves it to the center of the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if that boat doesn't come tomorrow, we're going to be trapped in the dark.

🔧 Kevin01:17

Radio check at dusk. If the boat's coming, they'll call on 2182. If not —

secure the porch door with the cedar shim, then check the generator lashings one more time

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer's at 988 and holding steady — that's the calm before it drops through the floor. The tin on the table means she's thinking planting, not just storage. Good.

🌿 Jenny01:18

I'll have the radio ready. way make sure the generator doesn't quit when it spikes.

Jenny picks up her pencil and begins to sketch the way the clouds are bruising over the north ridge.

🔧 Kevin01:19

Generator's got fresh oil, new diaphragm. She'll hold. Just don't let the fuel run dry.

check the fuel can level and top off the generator tank while there's still light

💭 peek at the thought
She's drawing the storm instead of the plants. First time in weeks the pencil's moved for something other than sea beet morphology. The clouds are worth it — bruised purple over the ridge, moving fast.

🌿 Jenny01:20

I'll keep an eye on the level.

Jenny stops own and looks at the half-eaten limpets on the plate.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure about the machine, but the island doesn't care about a diaphragm.

🔧 Kevin01:21

Eat what you can. Wrap the rest for tomorrow.

scrape the remaining limpets into the tin, seal it, and set it in the cool corner by the water tank

💭 peek at the thought
She's not hungry either. The limpets are going cold on the plate, congealing in their own juice. Storm appetite — the pressure sits on your stomach like a hand.

🌿 Jenny01:22

I'm not.

Jenny pushes the plate aside and picks up her notebook, tracing the salt glasses on the sea much sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm not even hungry anymore. The air is too thick to swallow.

🔧 Kevin01:23

The glands excrete at forty percent seawater concentration. You got the crystal structure right.

sit opposite her at the table, roll a cigarette, and wait out the silence

💭 peek at the thought
Salt glands, not glasses. She's been staring at that same illustration for an hour. The pencil hasn't moved. Her thumb keeps rubbing the edge of the page — worn smooth from turning.
