The Tide Rises

Kevin and Jenny must work together to wedge the mooring ring before the rain intensifies and the wind picks up further.

Kevin braced the mooring ring against the surging tide while Jenny hammered the cedar shims into the soft mortise walls. They worked through the rain to stop the ring from canting and pulling loose as the swell increased.

🌿 Jenny01:37

Kevin! The dock ring's twisting in the mortise—I need you to brace it while I get proper shims in place. Those cedar wedges are splitting!

run to the dock and grab the spare cedar shims from the cottage, then sprint back to the jetty and grab the heavy wrench from the tool chest, then grab the oak wedges from the workshop and head to the dock to assist Kevin in securing the mo

💭 peek at the thought
The mortise is softer than I thought—three cedar wedges already split, and the oak ones are still in the workshop. I need Kevin's help to hold the ring while I drive new shims, but I can't wait for him to climb down from the radio mast.

On it. Braced left—push the oak in tight, I’ll take the strain.

brace the mooring ring with my shoulder and hip, feet planted wide on the wet planks, gripping the heavy wrench to resist twist as Jenny drives the oak wedges home.

💭 peek at the thought
The ring’s canting under load—cedar’s splitting, oak’s our last hope. If we don’t brace it now, the storm’ll tear it loose. Jenny’s moving fast—good. I’ll hold steady, no wasted motion.

🌿 Jenny01:39

Keep it steady! It's shifting every time the swell hits.

hammer the enough wedges in with the mallet, wedging them into the mortise until the ring stops canting.

💭 peek at the thought
He's holding it, but the wood is like wet paper. If I don't get these tight now, the whole thing will pull through when the boat hits.

Holding. Give it another drive on the starboard wedge—port’s biting.

maintain full-body brace on the mooring ring, absorbing each swell’s kick through legs and shoulders, wrench braced against the dock timber, holding the mortise walls parallel while Jenny hammers.

💭 peek at the thought
Swell’s hitting hard—each surge tests the mortise. Ring’s fighting me. Oak’s holding so far, but the tide’s still rising. Need this solid before the wind turns ugly.

🌿 Jenny01:41

It's almost there. Just one more—don't let go!

drive the final wedge into the gap, checking the alignment of the ring with my hand as the rain intensifies.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is finally groaning instead of tearing. If I can just get one more in, the shims will take the load.

🔧 Kevin01:42

Not letting go. Drive it home.

keep the ring braced dead steady, one hand checking alignment as the final oak wedge seats, the other locked on the wrench, body braced against the jetty timber as the swell slams the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
Last wedge. Rain’s sheeting now—visibility dropping, deck slick. Ring feels true under my palm. If this seats clean, the mortise locks. Supply boat can tie up safe.
