Yanmar sea trial and letter to Tom

Rain eases to a steady drizzle. Kevin stands at the dinghy's transom with the engine cover off, checking fuel lines one last time. Jenny sits on the dock edge, letter to Tom folded on her knee, sealing wax and stamp ready. The supply boat is due in nine days. The mooring ring holds fast with its new oak wedges and bronze sleeve.

Kevin tested the Yanmar engine on the dinghy at half throttle and noted a constant vibration; Jenny inspected the garden wall and sketched a widening crack in the mortar. Both completed their intended tasks and returned to the cottage together.

The seeds are dry, Kevin. Don't let the salt get to them.

Place the letter in the waterproof bag and walk toward the cottage to check the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't fix that wall, the whole garden will slide into the sea before the next boat arrives.

Won't. Fuel lines are clean. Going to run her at half throttle, see if that vibration settles.

Start the Yanmar and let it warm at idle, watching the fuel lines for any weep, then ease the throttle to half and hold it there, feeling for the vibration through the transom.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the seeds. Salt air finds everything. The letter's in the bag — good. Nine days until the supply boat. Engine's ready for its real test.

Keep an eye on the exhaust temp.

Kneel by the garden wall and run a finger over the new cracks in the mortar.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the engine, but the wood is what's screaming.

🔧 Kevin02:34

Watching it. Water flow looks steady.

Hold the throttle at half, one hand on the tiller for balance, the other ready to kill it if the vibration worsens or the tell-tale weakens. Count the seconds.

💭 peek at the thought
Exhaust temp. Right. She knows the Yanmar better than she lets on. The garden wall's cracking again — lime mortar breathes but it doesn't like this constant wet.

🌿 Jenny02:35

The wall is shifting again.

Pull the notebook from my pocket and sketch the widening gap in the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide isrising. The lime won't hold long enough.

🔧 Kevin02:36

Noted. We'll need more lime and stone before the supply boat. Engine's holding steady — vibration's constant, not growing. Tell-tale solid.

Ease the throttle back to idle, kill the engine, and pull the cover back on. Wipe hands on a rag. Walk up to the garden wall where she's sketching.

💭 peek at the thought
The wall's moving. Again. Rain's been relentless and the ground's saturated. She's documenting it — good. Means she's thinking repair, not just worry. The engine's running clean at half throttle, vibration's still there but not worsening. Tell-tale's strong.
