Soil pH Testing

The tide has turned and the wind is blowing stronger now. Kevin and Jenny meet at the garden to check the heirloom beds before lunch.

Kevin and Jenny worked together to lime the tomato row in the garden, testing the soil pH afterward. Kevin fetched lime from the shed and spread it, while Jenny mixed it into the soil. They tested the pH at the center of the row and found it still too low.

🌿 Jenny09:32

The pH is at 5.6. We need more lime before we start the next row.

Digs a small hole in the center of the tomato row to take a soil sample for the test kit.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is too acidic, and the salt is eating the leaves. If I don't fix the pH now, these seeds are just a waste of tin.

🔧 Kevin09:34

I'll fetch the lime and put it down on the leeward side of the bed so it doesn't blow away. Should we wait until after lunch when the wind might ease?

walk to the shed, grab the lime sack, return to the garden, and spread lime along the sheltered edge of the heirloom bed, using the trowel to work it into the topsoil.

💭 peek at the thought
The pH is low—acidic soil won't support the heirlooms. I need to get the lime from the shed and spread it, but the wind's picking up; it'll blow the powder if I'm not careful.

🌿 Jenny09:34

No, we do it now while the light is good. The wind is coming in.

Kneels in the dirt and begins mixing the lime into the soil with the trowel.

💭 peek at the thought
If we wait, the salt spray will crust the lime before it even dissolves. I'm tired of waiting for perfect conditions.

🔧 Kevin09:36

Grab the other trowel—I'll work the far end. Let's get this row conditioned before the wind lifts the lime.

kneel beside Jenny, take the second trowel, and begin mixing lime into the soil at the opposite end of the tomato row, working toward the center.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—better to get it done while we can see what we're doing. The wind will only make it harder to spread evenly later. I'll help her work it in properly before it blows away.

🌿 Jenny09:36

Watch the wind. I don't want the dust in the sea beet.

Mixes the white lime into the dark earth, focusing on the top three inches.

💭 peek at the thought
We're actually doing it. My knees are screaming, but the soil needs this.

🔧 Kevin09:38

I'm keeping it low—no dust flying. Just a few more scoops and we'll have this row balanced.

continue mixing lime into the soil with the trowel, staying focused on the tomato row and avoiding the adjacent sea beet bed, working in short, deliberate strokes to minimize airborne particles.

💭 peek at the thought
She's worried about the lime drifting onto the sea beet bed—it could raise the pH too much there. I'll keep my side low and controlled, and we'll finish this row quickly before the gusts pick up.

🌿 Jenny09:38

The pH is still too low. We need to see how the test reacts.

Wipes sweat from her brow with a forearm and presses the trowel deeper into the earth.

💭 peek at the thought
We're making progress, but if the wind picks up more, this whole effort is for nothing.

🔧 Kevin09:40

Let it settle ten minutes. I'll pull a fresh strip and test the center of the row while you finish the far end.

wait a moment, then walk to the seed tin shelf, retrieve the water test kit, return to the garden, and prepare a fresh pH strip for the tomato row center.

💭 peek at the thought
She wants to test again after the lime works in. We should wait a bit for it to integrate, then pull another sample. The wind's steady now—good for keeping dust down, bad if it dries the soil too fast.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:40

fine. I'll finish the edge. Don't lose the strip.

works the last of the lime into the soil, keeping it low to avoid the gusts.

💭 peek at the thought
Ten minutes is an eternity in this wind. The salt is already settling on my skin.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin09:42

Got the strip. I'll test the center now—keep the lime off the beet bed, yeah?

kneel at the center of the tomato row, cup one hand around the pH strip to block the wind, dip it into the moist soil, wait ten seconds, then compare the color to the chart on the kit.

💭 peek at the thought
She's being careful with the application—smart. I need to handle the test strip properly; one mistake and we're guessing again. I'll shield it from the wind with my body when I dip it.
