Offering at the Stones

Kevin and Jenny walk together along the ridge path toward the shrine, the wind increasing and carrying salt spray from the cliffs. The sky is heavy with overcast clouds, and the first distant rumbles of thunder are heard inland. They arrive at the ring of weathered stones as light begins to fade.

The air at the shrine is thick and motionless, the 31°C heat pressing down on the stone circles. Kevin and Jenny agree to move to the spring before the weather breaks, noting the barometer's steady drop. While the tide is falling, they have a window to fill the water jugs and return to the cottage before the heavy rain sets in.

🌿 Jenny11:04

The barometer is at 996. We need to get back before the rain really starts.

Jenny traces a finger over a worn name on a stone, feeling the grit of salt and lichen.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; the supply boat won't make it if this storm hits.

🔧 Kevin11:05

Five minutes here. Then we move.

walk the perimeter of the stone ring, checking the ground for fresh erosion or shifted stones that might signal ground movement from the coming storm

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's backing northeast and the pressure's still dropping — 996 now, was 999 at noon. This isn't a passing squall. Front's moving faster than I liked. The shrine stones have seen worse but the cottage roof hasn't been tested since the October blow. Need to get back and check the generator lashings, the garden tarp corners, the dock lines. And the dinghy mooring — if the ring holds but the piling shifts...

🌿 Jenny11:06

Five minutes and that's it. The wind is picking up.

Jenny pulls her notebook from her pocket and makes a quick, way sketch of the lichen-covered stone in the center of the ring.

💭 peek at the thought
Five minutes is an eternity when the sky is turning that color.

🔧 Kevin11:07

Workshop door hasp sticks. Need to check it when we're back.

stand at the edge of the shrine ring facing the cliffs, watching the darkening horizon where sea meets sky, one hand resting on a standing stone for balance against the gusts

💭 peek at the thought
She's recording. Good. Means she's still seeing a future where someone reads these notes. The lichen sketch, the Carex transect, the sea beet salt glands — she's building a record of this place. More than I've done in eleven months. The thunder's closer now. Sound travels different over water at night, carries farther. That rumble's maybe twenty miles inland but the wind's bringing it our way. Should've secured the workshop door better. The hasp sticks.

🌿 Jenny11:08

I'll bring the extra bolts when we go back. The air is getting too heavy.

Jenny snaps her notebook shut and tucks it under her arm, squinting against the sudden gust of wind.

💭 peek at the thought
If the hasp fails, the salt will get into the wood-grain fast.

🔧 Kevin11:08

Let's move. Low ground first — spring path's sheltered.

turn and walk down the ridge path toward the spring, keeping Jenny just ahead in my line of sight so I can call if she slips on the wet stones

💭 peek at the thought
She's already thinking ahead — extra bolts for the dock ring, just in case. Smart. The sister knee took the wedges but the steel plate and through-bolts are what'll hold it now. If the piling shifts under load from the boat's surge, those bolts need to stay true. Wind's shifting more east now — gusts hitting us broadside across the ridge. Salt spray's stinging my lips. The barometer's fallen another two points since we left the cottage. 994 now, if I had to guess. Time to go.

🌿 Jenny11:10

Right. I'm right behind you.

Jenny follows quickly, her boots crunching on the dry earth as she avoids the loose own on the path.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is shifting north; we need to be inside the cottage before the rain goes horizontal.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:10

Spring's just ahead. We'll fill the jugs there, then straight to the cottage.

increase pace slightly along the path, scanning the tree line for any broken branches that might fall in the gusts

💭 peek at the thought
Path's drying out where the sun touched it earlier, but the north-facing stretch stays damp. Loose shale near the spring bend — she's watching her step. Good. Wind's up to fifteen knots now, gusting twenty. Heard that crack of thunder again, closer. Rain's not here yet but the air's saturated — feels like walking into a wet wool blanket. Need to hit the cottage, batten down, then check the Yanmar at first light. Cutless bearing's at 0.38mm play — still within limits if we baby it. But if the seawater intake clogs with debris from the runoff...

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny11:12

I'll grab the heavy jugs. We need to hurry.

Jenny brushes hair out of her eyes, watching the first few heavy drops of rain hit the dust.

💭 peek at the thought
If the spring gets turbid, we'll be in trouble for tomorrow.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:13

I'll carry both. You lead, pick the line.

step ahead of Jenny on the path, testing each foothold on the clay before committing weight, the two empty water jugs slung over my shoulders by their rope handles

💭 peek at the thought
First drops. Big ones. They hit the dust and bloom dark. She's already thinking heavy jugs — both twenty-litre cans means two trips or one slow carry. I'll take them. My back's held this long. The spring path drops steep the last fifty metres, slick clay over rock. She favors the ankle on descents. Should go first, test the footing. Thunder's maybe ten miles now. Count between flash and bang next time. Cottage has the generator, the radio, the stores. If the mast insulator holds, we can still raise the supply boat tomorrow. If not...
