Midday Meal and Weather Watch

Kevin and Jenny return to the keeper's cottage as the sky darkens further. They share a meal of limpets and sea beet, eating in silence while watching the thickening clouds. The barometer continues to fall, and the first drops of rain begin to stir on the roof.

Kevin worked on the dock to reinforce the pilings with sister knee reinforcements, successfully seating the wedges despite the rain. Jenny tended to the garden, checking the soil pH and preparing the sea beet for drying while the pressure continued to drop.

We need to check the tarp again before it really starts pouring.

Stand up and walk to the garden to check the stakes.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, we're going to be stuck in a gale.

I’ll come with you. Hold the corner while I re-stake it.

walk to the garden with Jenny, grab the mallet and a stake from the shed, and re-secure the loose tarp corner by driving the stake deep and retying the line.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer’s dropping fast, wind’s picking up from the east-northeast. That tarp’s already got one corner loose—if it goes, the seed trays and young plants are done for. I should’ve checked it sooner. Now’s not the time to wait.

🌿 Jenny10:44

Tighten the knot, it's still slipping through the twine like last time.

Pull the rope taut and check the tension on the tomato row cover.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up. If that stake doesn't hold, the whole row will be ripped out.

🔧 Kevin10:46

Let me redo the knot. This time I’ll use a trucker’s hitch—won’t slip under load.

take the rope from Jenny, tie a trucker’s hitch around the stake, pull it tight to tension the tarp over the tomato row, and secure the standing line with two half-hitches.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—this knot’s been giving us trouble all week. The twine’s worn, and the rope’s slick with damp. If we don’t fix it right, the wind’ll peel the tarp back like a lid. I’ve got the mallet in hand; time to make it hold.

🌿 Jenny10:46

It's tight for now. Let's get inside before the rain gets heavy.

Wipe the mud off my hands and walk back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's confident in the knots, but the soil is turning soft and the wind is just getting louder.

🔧 Kevin10:48

Yeah, let’s get in. I’ll check the radio sked later—see if the supply boat’s still on for tomorrow.

follow Jenny back to the cottage, wipe my own hands on my trousers, and hang the damp jacket on the peg by the door.

💭 peek at the thought
The tarp’s holding—for now. But the barometer’s still falling, wind’s backing southeast, and the sea’s starting to kick up. We got the dock mooring ring sorted today, but if this blows hard, we’ll be checking it again before dark. Inside’s the safest place to be while we wait it out.

🌿 Jenny10:49

Check the radio after we eat. I want to see the pressure reading.

Walk to the kitchen and start a small fire in the wood way.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, we're running out of dry fuel faster than I thought.

🔧 Kevin10:50

I’ll check it. Pressure first, then the sked.

sit at the table, pull the bowl of limpets closer, and eat while the rain thickens on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching the barometer like I am. Pressure’s the only warning we get out here. The radio’ll give us the forecast and maybe a word from the supply boat—but the barometer’s already told us what’s coming. I’ll fire it up after we eat, same as always. For now, the stove’s drawing, the limpets are hot, and the rain’s starting to hammer the roof.
